Chelsea star Frank Lampard insists that The Blues deserve to be crowned Premier League champions this Sunday. The dynamic midfielder has once again contributed greatly towards Chelsea’s success by scoring an astonishing 21 league goals this season from midfield with one his most pivotal goals coming in the 2-0 victory at Anfield last Sunday. Both Chelsea and Lampard in particular had a rocky start to the campaign and after bowing out of the Champions League to Inter Milan in February it seemed as if their season was falling apart. Ever since former mentor Jose Mourinho came back and haunted his former employers on a miserable night at the Bridge, the West London outfit have been in fantastic form domestically and are on the verge of a league and cup double, a feat they have never achieved.  Despite a number of ups and downs this season Lampard believes that his side deserve to win the Premier League and that it would be as good an achievement compared to the back to back league titles they won under the guidance of Mourinho.

“It’s been a season of peaks and troughs.” said Lampard.

“To win the title under José Mourinho, especially the first year, was an amazing feeling and sensation. But this one, with the ups and downs we’ve experienced, feeling the low points of the season and the togetherness we’ve needed to come through … well, to go and achieve it now would be great. We’re within touching distance now.”

The England man himself admits that there have been some tough times for him and his team mates this season especially the defeat to Inter Milan that saw them eliminated from the round of 16 of the Champions League for the first time in four years. Despite this he thinks the character that the players and staff have shown since is a testament to their spirit.

“We’ve had to dig in. I’ll not lie – it’s been a fairly difficult season at times. There have been moments when we’ve lost points and had a few difficult periods, none more so than when we lost to Inter Milan and then drew at Blackburn. We were in a bit of a rut then, to be honest. That was the moment to dig in. Credit to the staff for that. We’ve always had a great spirit here but we dug a bit deeper this year. We understood what we had to do and the reaction since then is what’s put us in this position with a game to go. If we do go on and win it now, we’ll have deserved to have won it.”

The 31 year old has had a public appraisal from his manager Carlo Ancelotti who is delighted with his players season.

“I am not surprised.  Lampard has scored 26 goals in the season and he has these fantastic skills,” the former Milan boss stated

“He moves into the box at the right time and he always does this.”

The Italian and his Chelsea players are now preparing for Sundays home game against Wigan where a victory will guarantee them their third Premier League crown.
