Chelsea beat Wigan 8-0 at Stamford Bridge to secure their first premier league trophy in three years in Carlo Ancelotti’s first season as manager. The Blues knew a win would be enough to pip Manchester United regardless of their result at Old Trafford and the Chelsea nerves were eased when Nicolas Anelka got the opener in the sixth minute. Wigan’s Gary Caldwell was then sent off for a foul on Frank Lampard inside the box, Lampard making no mistake from the spot to give Chelsea a 2-0 half time lead.

Didier Drogba was keen to get on the scoresheet as he was fighting it out with Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney for the golden boot and after further goals from Kalou and Anelka, Drogba finally got his 27th of the season, heading home from a Lampard cross. The goal was Chelsea’s 100th premier league goal of the season. The Ivorian hitman quickly added two more to complete a hat-trick before Ashley Cole rounded off the perfect day for Chelsea with the eighth.
