Manchester United did all they could to retain the premier league trophy with a comfortable 4-0 victory over Stoke City at Old Trafford, but missed out on their record fourth consecutive title as Chelsea beat Wigan 8-0 at Stamford Bridge. Knowing they needed a win and hoping Wigan could cause an upset in West London, Manchester United held up their end of the bargain with goals from Darren Fletcher, Ryan Giggs, Ji Sung Park and a Danny Higgingbotham own goal. However, the result from Stamford Bridge meant it was a subdued atmosphere at Old Trafford as the Manchester United players gave their lap of appreciation after the match.

Wayne Rooney limped out of the game 13 minutes from the end with a suspected re-occurrence of a groin injury that will be cause for concern for England manager Fabio Capello with the World Cup just round the corner. United manager Sir Alex Ferguson gave an update on Rooney’s injury after the game.
