Wenger Agrees Deal For International Goalkeeper – Then Loses His Bottle

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is reported to have pulled out of a deal to sign CSKA Moscow goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev at the last minute during the January transfer window. According to sport.co.uk, Wenger had a deal in place to sign the 24-year-old international, but lost his bottle and decided to stick with the calamitous pair Almunia and Fabianski.

There were many rumours during the January window linking Arsenal with a whole host of keepers, with Thomas Sorenson believed to have been close to signing on deadline day, so these reports of a deal for Akinfeev are certainly believable. Neither Almunia or Fabianski have covered themselves in glory this season and many have tipped Wenger to have finally lost his patience with the pair.

Akinfeev is a much sought-after goalkeeper and Wenger has expressed his interest in the past but it’s not known whether Arsenal will renew their interest in the summer. But if Arsene has any sense he will swallow his pride, pick up the phone this morning and get the deal done.

If these reports are accurate, Wenger’s decision to pull out of the deal could have cost Arsenal the title. I’m not exaggerating here, Akinfeev is top class and would never have made the schoolboy errors Almunia and Fabianski made against the likes of Birmingham and Wigan. But there is no point casting blame at the Arsenal boss, as long as he realises his mistake and corrects it quickly.

All the signs are pointing to Arsenal signing a goalkeeper in the summer and i personally cant wait for the day i get to write about our new No1 on here. Whether it be Akinfeev, Hart, Gordon, Green, Buffon or one of the other 2345 goalkeepers we’ve been linked with, it doesn’t matter. They are all better than what we’ve got, so any one of them is an improvement.

What do Arsenal fans make of the Akinfeev reports? Please leave your comments below…

Akinfeev is just over 6ft tall and has serious problems dealing with crosses, just like Given (who doesn’t come off his line). Why replace Almunia or Fabianski with another keeper who can’t deal with set pieces, especially when our defence is already small enough. We certainly need a new keeper but not Akinfeev.

@arsenal4ever – whether or not AW has lost it or not (and he may have, I’m not sure) he’s also been our greatest manager in living memory, so he deserves a bit more respect than that.

ok I am apologiziing for asshole but thats it!!! You said it right. He did in the past. But this season was called for a break or make ones. Did he deliver? No!!! Did he buy a striker in january and now a GK? No!!! Simple as that time is out for him but I cant see the board to sack him. They want to extend his contract!! What?? They are all smoking grass if they make decissions like that??? Completely joke. If he will sign a world class keeper, ok. But his stubborness will kill us again!!!

Wojciech Szczęsny might have been in wengers thinking or the fact that he’s only 6 feet and aginfeev can deal with crosses
@arsenal4ever no manager could have kept arsenal in the top four with the wage and transfer budget he had after buliding the stadium so stop being a dumbass and respect the man.
He had 2 PL titles in 20 years before he came we won three PL, 4 Fa cup and 1-2 Shields in matter of 7 years before the stadium so stop talking like an idiot and respect the man.

Arsenal Talent all 24 Years and Under
    Gk – Wojciech Szczęsny, Mannone
    Fulbacks – Traore, Gibbs
CB – Norvedit, Bartley, Ayling, Vermaelen, Djourou
DM – Song, Eastmond, Coquelin, Denilson
CM – Ramsey, Wilshere, Lansbury, Merida, Nasri, Cesc, Diaby
Wingers – Walcott, Barazite, Wellington Silva
    ST – Vela, Bendtner
    That’s talent

I think Coquelin has been used more in the right back role this season rather than his more familiar DM role, oddly enough Eastmond has gone the other way from RB to DM. I’m not sure if either will be permanent or that they are still in flux.

Yes. Great Talent. So great that the manager would rather play a 1st team player out of position than play half of them. So either they’re not as talented or you think or the manager who signed them isn’t as good at spotting young talent as we all thought.

Traore: Not good enough. Runs around like a headless chicken.
Denilson: Talent? Perhaps. Not good enough at delivering it consistently.
      Diaby: See Denilson. Bloody donkey.
      Vela: Talent? LOL. My Arse.

As for the rest, well the ones who aren’t in the 1st team already, if they were that good they’d be playing.

im furious, if wenger pulled out on signing him i think its a disgrace given the keepers that we got, i love wenger but he can be the most frustrating man on earth especially in the transfer market, please jus buy the players we need, we got the money, so spend it starting with a goalkeeper, then a CB, a DM, an maybe an, AM, with obviously chamakh comming on a free, so that would be four players, thats not being unreasonable isit, im pissed off coz we never kno what he’s gonna do in the maket and the feeling i get is he’s yet again gonna squabble over the transfer fee’s and wages an where not gonna get the players we need, i hope im wrong tho. wenger i love you but stop letting us all down an get what we need.

You’re “furious” over an internet transfer rumour?

I’d suggest chilling out in the sunshine this summer, save some stress.

Why do people persist in linking us with Robert Green? I’d be mortified if we signed him. He’s worse than what we already have.

kinfeev is top class and would never have made the schoolboy errors Almunia and Fabianski made against the likes of Birmingham and Wigan.

Take it you didnt see him push the ball into his own net in the russian league the other day,

he has made more and worse mistakes then fabianski has this season.

i swear he gets his rep from being a good player on FM

    • Fab4

      May 10, 2010 at 1:42 pm

Nope, didn’t see him make that mistake but i have seen him make match winning saves on several other occassions I’ve seen him play and after watching Almunia and Fabianski for years, i’m yet to see them win Arsenal one game between them.

He get’s his rep because he’s a very good young goalkeeper.

SEASON IS OVER TRANSFER SPECULATION BEGINS HOPEFULLY WENGER WILL MAKE A COUPLE MORE SIGNING AFTER CHAMAK

Arshavin ————-– Chamak ————— Van Persie
    —————–———– Fabregas ————————–—
    ——————– Melo ——— Song ———-–———–
    Clichy ——– Vermaelen ——–– Cahill —-—– Sagna
    —————–—————– Green

GK – Sell Almunia or Loan Fabianski and then buy Robert Green. Good players and Wojeich can take over in a couple of years and Green can become second choice. I choose Green because he’s a good keeper, 30 and will solve or bandaid this goalkeeping problem until Wojciech Szczęsny is ready to take over in a couple of years. Hopefully not more than 5-6 million

CB – Cahill is a very good choice, strong, powerfull, tall and we have a good relation with Bolton. Maybe Wilshere and Vela on loan to Bolton will sweeten the deal and we might get him for less than 10 million

DM – Melo might be a good buy since Diaby or Denilson are not ready yet for it yet. Melo is optional maybe not with all the talent we already have in midfield. I think this transfer wont happen as Diaby has showed his true class this season and might do better next season.

ST – Chamak is already coming and will surely be a great addition

Not more than 20 million (30-35 million if we go for Melo) of spending and we can recoup most by selling Eduardo and either Fabianski or Almunia. We already should have money left from selling toure and Adebayor

GK – Green, Fabianski, Mannone and Szschesny
    LB – Clichy, Gibbs, Traore
    RB – Sagna, Eboue
    CB – Cahill, Vermaelen, Djourou,Sol, Norvedit/Savic
DM – Song, Denilson, Melo (maybe), Eastmond
    CM – Fabrgeas, Diaby, Wilshere/Ramsey
RW – Walcott, Rosicky, Van Persie, Nasri, Bendtner
LW – Arshavin, Vela, Nasri, Rosicky
ST – Chamak, Bendtner, Vela, Van Persie

Sell – Eduardo and Almunia and release Gallas, Silvestre and Sendros, Gibert, Bothelo

WTF are these real Arsenal fans posting here , no plastic from the sky era, some of you sound more like spurs fans.

we didnt win a trophy because we sufferred the worst injury crisis in the last 40 years at Arsenal, we didnt win a trophy because the whole team at times gave up , the wigan game and others were disgraceful, just remember this before all you sky fans junped on the bandwagon, we played awful boring defensive football and won sone stuff before that we were crap going back to 71, and before that we were awful back to prewar.

When you build a stadium costing 500 million it means tightning the purse we arent city or chelsea, neither can we spend desperately like the spuds to finish 4th – their highest finish since god knows when. Wenger changed the british game brought flair and style to arsenal and won the double twice and more. he stopped all the boozing and stupidity he gave us Real Arse fans something more than we had to be proud of so give the man some credit, give his career and knowledge he assimalated credit and realise he knows far more about football than any spotty skate board hair cut championship manager playing oik who goes to the emirates with daddy now and agian and if you dont like it piss off to white hart lane they like feckless wankers down there will suit you well, meanwhile the rest of us will support aw and the arsenal

    May 10, 2010 at 10:08 pm

Wenger should make g.k and striker signings his top priority this season. akinfeev, zapata, subotic, chamakh, ike uche(zaragoza).osazie(cska mosko).and if we must buy tenagers, they must established ones e.g hazard, modric,di maria,aguero.udefi(pillars).we should get rid of silvestre, gallas, campbell, eduardo, almunia, fabienski, denilson. wenger must splash the cash, this time.cos poor goalkeeping and back up for our injured players cost us the trophy this season.if wenger fail to act this time.he should be sacked.else we shall continue like for a long time. keep the faith.

Well written Steve. Kudos to you. But I hope it`s not Green. I`m no keeper coach, but I don`t see Green as any better than Almunia.

    May 11, 2010 at 1:52 am

sell denilson. Many times he just lazy to stop strikers and watch goal goes in. Keep our most current squad and add few like buffon/hart, gary cahill, m.upson, b.hangeland, edin dzeko all at gbp60m cost. Only sell almunia, denilson, silvestre fishead.

To Andrew–you lit players under 24 but in order to put it into perspective take a look at Barcelona–so many great players under 24 and THEY win trophies NOW. Look closer at home and consider another winning team, Man United:
Rooney 24;Evans 22;Fletcher 25;Valencia 24; Nani 23; Gibson 23; Anderson 23; Rafael 20 nd his dynamic brother Fabio 20; Macheda 19;Wellbeck 19; Obertan 21. Add our new CH signing from Fulham at 20 and all of those great Academy players with Pogba likely to be one of the very best in the EPL in a few years and the future is GREAT for UNited. Difference is that like Barca, United win NOW with many of the above playing key roles!!!

  24. richard

    May 11, 2010 at 2:21 am

to Steve W–stop with the ongoing excuses, we have heard the same BS for 6 years now. Spurs for many years played entertaining football and didn’t have much t show for it. West Ham is a better example were great entertaining football was played but no trophies in the cabinet come season end. There are no points given for style–if that’s what you want then tune into gymnastics. Great Defense and Goals win championships and brother that’s all that matters at the end of the season! Stop kidding yourself, you are No Barcelona and Chelsea had the better of them in the past and Inter Milan (tactics -tactics , tactics) showed how it’s done this year. Get your head out of the sand buddy, style is for the catwalks!!
