With the transfer window almost upon us, it’s no surprise that so many rumours are filling the back pages of the daily newspapers. Today sees Manchester United being linked with an audacious last minute bid to snatch David Villa from Barcelona, while Fergie is believed to be lining up a £15m deal for Everton’s Jack Rodwell.

David Villa

The Daily Mirror has claimed that Manchester United made an 11th hour offer to buy David Villa before the striker agreed to join Barcelona for £35m yesterday. Sir Alex Ferguson had previously said he would only look to bring in ‘one good player’ this summer and Valencia president Manuel Llorente declared that he received a late offer from a Premier League team.

“We had a significant offer from England that was not Chelsea. But Barcelona was best for us and the player. Villa has given us a lot and he deserves this move, especially if you consider that he wanted to stay in Spain.”

If this is true then it was a bold move by Fergie as Villa had his heart set on a move to Barca and it was highly unlikely he would turn them down in order to join United. But it will hearten United fans to hear their boss is looking at players of the quality of Villa.

Jack Rodwell

Manchester United are set to bid £15m for Everton star Jack Rodwell, according to The Telegraph. Fergie will make his move despite Everton boss David Moyes issuing a ‘hands-off’ warning to their Premier League rivals. Rodwell has been linked with Chelsea, Arsenal and City as well as United in recent months, but it seems as though Ferguson is set to make the first move for one of England’s brightest young stars.

Despite rumours linking his player with a move away, Moyes expects Rodwell to remain an Everton player.

As far as we are concerned, Jack will be here next season. He has a four-year deal and it is being renewed just now.”I feel he understands that he is being pushed in the right direction at Everton and he appreciates that he is at the right place.”

Why would you assume it was United who were the mystery bidder? Is it because you can feel things slipping away from you and you would LIKE it to be ? What makes you think it wasn’t the Gooners? Or the Spuds? Or, dare we say it, Citteh???
The writing’s on the wall methinks!

It’s more likely that it was money bags City or possibly Benitez trying to lure him to Anfield…Fergie knows 35million on a 29 year old striker is NOT good value. It would be for 1-2 seasons, but after that your struggling to recoup your money, hence why he’s linked with Rodwell, young, talented and value for money.

Rodwell’s signing a new contract at Everton. And regardless, £15m wouldn’t be enough.

When Rooney went to United, Everton needed the cash, I know we have not got mega bucks, but you can see Moyesy is building a side. We d not need to sell this time, and I can see Rodwell and others coming to fore next season.
