[PLAYER RATINGS] Olympiacos 3-1 Arsenal: Some Dreadful Performances From The Gunners

Arsenal went down 3-1 to Olympiacos tonight on a disappointing evening for Arsene Wengers men. Here are my player ratings from the game.

Arsenal’s second string went down 3-1 to Olympiacos tonight in what was largely a disappointing night for Arsene Wenger and his men. It was a game filled with individual errors, injuries and ultimately defeat.

The home side made life difficult for the Gunners all night with their pressing game not allowing our players a second on the ball, but the Arsenal team didn’t help themselves with bad habits creeping back into our game. Sloppy passing was rife from start to finish and several players failed to step up their game in the hostile atmosphere of the Karaiskakis Stadium.

There were a few positives, namely Chamberlain, Miquel and Vermaelen (oh, and Benayoun’s goal). But the rest were poor, and a few were down-right dreadful (no prizes for guessing who they were!). Here are my player ratings:

Player Ratings:

Fabianski – 4 – Back to his useless self. He will have do play a lot better than this is he’s to take the No.1 spot from Szczesny. Awful kicking, left in no mans land for the opening goal and nearly conceded a second before going off injured.

Djourou – 4.5 – Very poor from Johan. He’s not a right back and shouldn’t be played there. But he should still get the basics right. Sloppy passing and caught on of position on several occasions.

Vermaelen – 7 – Tried his best to marshall the back line but can only do so much playing next to Squillaci. Drove forward on several occasions looking to make things happen, but was made to look bad by those around him.

Squillaci – 4 – Dreadful. Constantly out of position, left balls he should have dealt with, didn’t close down, poor passing, i could go on. Back to the bench asap please.

Santos – 5.5 – Struggled in the first half to deal with the Olympiacos attack but wasn’t the worst performer out there. Went off injured early in the second half. We now have no fit recognised left back available. Can someone please explain why our only fit left back played tonight?

Coquelin – 5.5 – Ran his heart out but struggled to get a foothold in midfield as the Olympiacos players adopted their high intensity pressing game.

Frimpong – 6 – Gave away some silly late fouls, one which lead to the third goal, and was lucky not to be sent off for two bookings. But he was on the ball more than Arshavin or Coquelin and was at least trying to make things happen in the middle of the park.

Chamberlain – 7 – Made some excellent runs down the right with some dangerous crosses in to the box, just didn’t get on the ball enough. Handled himself well on a difficult night.

Benayoun – 7 – Excellent finish for his goal and was tidy when in possession, but like Chamberlain just didn’t get on the ball enough.

Arshavin – 4.5 – Dreadful. Missed an early one-on-one chance to open the scoring and hardly touched the ball after that. When he did, he gave it away. Was played in his ‘preferred’ position behind the striker (if Chamakh can be called that?) and still failed to impress. Didn’t look interested in the slightest.

Chamakh – 5 – Some fans will say ‘at least he tries’, which is true to a certain extent. But Arsenal need more from a main striker, and unfortunately Chamakh doesn’t have the required quality. Doesn’t hold the ball up, isn’t a goal threat and all round play is poor. Striker in January please Arsene. Although the Moroccan did reasonably well to knock down for Benayouns goal.

Mannone – 3 – Dreadful. I have no idea what he was up to for the second goal. He must have thought he was still outside the box, so couldn’t handle it. But it doesn’t matter, it was a school boy error made at the highest level. After that he was all over the place for the rest of the game.

Miguel – 6.5 – I was surprisingly impressed with the youngster. He settled in well at left back in difficult circumstances and put a good shift in.

Rosicky – 6 – Missed a great chance to make it 2-2 after some good work with Benayoun but Rosicky left his man free in the box for the third.

You can watch the goals from the game here.

So those are my ratings. Remember, its just my opinion. You are free to have opposing views but please leave your opinions sensibly in the comments section.

Agree with your ‘dreadful’s … Only I’d add Djourou to that list too and get shot of them in January.
Not good enough to wear an Arsenal shirt messrs Johan, Arshavin and Flapiansky.

Can i just say that, that was not a knock down for the Goal. It was complete miss control by chamack. You can see in th replay that he actually knocks the ball whe his hand when is on his way trying to dive. he doesn’t try for me and i hope wenger will just cut his losses and sell the the useless prat. just someone who can do the basics would be nice doesn’t have to cost 25mil just a striker who knows how shoot, pass and lay the ball off. I dont need flicks and trick from a second choice striker. Just a goal every now and then would be nice.

Come on, Chamberlain was good, the few times that they got the ball to him, and Benayoun was reasonable. Other than that poor performances all round, even Vermaelen looked shakey. Chamakh, Arshavin, Squillaci and Djourou are all well below the required standard for Arsenal. Coquelin and Frimpong will learn a lot from this because they will never have experienced pressing like that and would never have been more aware of the need for a good first touch. They are young though and they shouldn’t be too disheartened. The more senior players have every right to be embarassed.

Of cos TV will be shaky. he has to take care of the 2 clowns who should have never be allowed to wear our shirt again.

Attitude of Djourou for the first goal was just unbelievable, he did not even seems interested to track back.

AW paid the price for being stubborn, it was obvious that this match is a meaningless one and we have lost another senior defender in Santos and hopefully TV’s confidence didn’t take any beating from playing with two clowns.

It is obvious that we cannot win this game with the players that we fielded last night. Why even risk TV and Santos?

It’s became very apparent that we have plenty of deadwood in our squad and we need to get rid of them soon. Seeing those walking deads in our shirt while playing with poor attitude or abltility is just annoying.

Think you are showing favouritism and being far too generous for me chamberlain would have top scored with a 6.5. miquel would a 6 with benayoun the rest would have scored.between 2 and 5.5 vermaelen had his worst mazch in an arsenal shirt and wenger must be regretting taking him and santos. for me there was only a few positives. chamberlain and miquel plua the injuries and final confirmation that fabianski mannone djourou squillaci arshavin and chamak aint worth a carrot. all 6 should be shipped out in january along with almunia hoyte rosicky diaby eastmond denilson murphy vela bendtner and park. bring in a howard van der weil cahill vertonghen baines mvila.gotze hazard soldado sow podolski now that would be a 2nd string worth fielding and really put the pressure on the first x1

I had High expectations of Mannone but now, I guess we should use Shea or Martinez as backup for chezzer.

We need an overhaul of our backup players,AOC,can stay, frimpong&couquelin should go on loan in the EPL & possibly 2 d same club, dead wood out in january, also miquel can stay as back up 2 santos till Gibbs recovers, also d GKs should be replaced, what of that tall guy from birmingham, would make chezzar more serious.

You`d have to be an Arsenal fanatic to excuse this performance. There were players out there that should not even be on the pay roll and they weren`t youngsters. I don`t like naming names because it causes friction but this time I will. Fabianski, Mannone, Squillaci, Asharvin and Chamakh supposedly experience players on high salaries and not worth a cracker.
Top this with one of Wengers classic errors in playing Vermaelen and Santos and it was a night to forget. I wonder what was going through RVP`s mind as he watched this display.(we`ll never know).

You guys are mad… Here are my Ratings.

    FAB : 2
    JD : 2.5
    SQA : 2
TV5 : 3 (Because he went on to attack as we didnt have a striker)
    SANTOS : 3.5
AOC : 3.5 ( I know he is good and we hope alot on him but he was shit in this game…Did not have a shot on target in this game)
Arshavin : (-2) He is a Lazy Bxxtard
    Chamakh : 3
Frimpong : 3 (Stupid yellow Card)
Coq : 4(won the ball well)
Yossi : 5 (was all over the pitch and nice goal)
Miguel : 7 ( the only one who did perform in the match)
Roc : 6.5 (Changed the momentum of the game)
    Mannone : 1..(no comments for him…

I think this is the best ratings ever and the worst arsenal performance i have seen since the 8-2 loss to united. Damn i am sad we lost but it is a great experience for the lads… Hope they take it in a positive way and grow from their errors when they watch the reply to know how awful they were…

I am a die hard arsenal fan and i am sad to give these ratings but the team today was very poor indeed.

Wenger never learn or he is just stuborn,we dnt have second striker, our second string cant defeat a league one team,we hav too many ‘ghost players’ who are satisfied just earning their wages and not fighting for the club. Can u imagine chamakh, squillaci, almunia, diaby, rosicky, djorou, arshavin, park etc playing for clubs like man city, man utd, chelsea, barcelona, real madrid etc. Lets be realistic we are just an average team with only first eleven players that always punch above its weight

the strenght of every good team lies in the bench but its so unfortunate that our fringe list is a mess

I did nt watch d game but from wat i hav read here it was terrible,i can feel the frustrations of a lot of u but it is nt all doom for our second string, considering our injuries, many of them dat playd 2 nite are third string, coquelin, chamberlain, djourou at right back is our 4th choice at right back, squillaci is our fifth choice at centre back,if the likes of wilshere, diaby.sagna, jenkinson, gibbs were nt injured and also if rosicky were nt jst returning frm injuries, this is wat our second string wuld look like……fabianski, jenkinson, djourou, koscielny, gibbs, diaby, rosicky, ramsey, arshavin, benayoun, chamakh,on the bench…mannone, frimpong, park, coquelin, chamberlain, ryo, squillaci…dat is our second string

Concur with all that has been written. Shown once again that our main weakness is the lack of depth in the squad- one of the consequences of continually buying cheap. Pay peanuts-get moneys.
Quite what has happened to Arshavin’s confidence I have no idea-but he looks completely lost- and it is a tragedy.

    December 7, 2011 at 1:46 pm

Arshavin looks very disinterested. Atleast d others tried 2 show concern even though they were below par but d guy(ars23) shows he has no feelings whatsover 4 d team. I suggest we ship him out.
