[Player Ratings] Bolton 0 – 0 Arsenal: Time To Forget Fourth?

Arsenal lost further ground on fourth place after a disappointing 0-0 draw away to Bolton. Here are my player ratings from the game for the Gunners players.

Another disappointing result and once again Arsenal missed the chance to put some pressure on fourth-placed Chelsea. The 0-0 draw last night makes it 1 point from 12 so far this year and leaves us sitting in seventh position in the league table.

I managed to find a stream to watch the game and for those of you who missed it, here’s a brief recap (there’s also a link to watch video highlights at the end of this post).

We should have been at least 2-0 inside the opening 30 minutes. Ramsey was played in by van Persie but the Welshman elected to try a first time shot instead of taking a touch and hit it straight at Bogdan. Van Persie and Chamberlain could also have done better with chances before Walcott was sent clear one-one-one by a lovely Chamberlain through-ball, but Theo lacked any real conviction with his finish and Bogdan got a touch to send it wide of the post.

Bolton then had a could of chances themselves, with Ngog going close twice as Koscielny struggled to deal with the former Liverpool striker.

The second half saw van Persie hit the post before striking the bar with a stunning right-footed chip. Fine margins but these things just don’t seem to be going our way this season. Bolton finished the stronger side as we ran out of ideas. The lack of attacking talent available on the bench was worrying, yet not surprising. We all knew we needed a striker in the transfer window.

The good news is both Liverpool and Chelsea are also dropping points and somehow we’re only five points adrift of fourth despite our terrible form. So if we can put a run together we’re still in with a shout.

We really didn’t play badly at all last night, in fact the opening half hour was excellent. We just failed to take our chances and lacked any real goal threat on the bench. It was just ‘one of those nights’, but we’ve had far too many of those already this season and time is running out.

Unless we can find our shooting boots, fourth will be beyond us. We can’t keep spurning chances and hoping van Persie produces a moment of magic. The supporting act need to chip in with their share of goals, and that isn’t happening right now.

Anyway, i will be doing a post on Arsenal’s lack of goals shortly but for now here are my player ratings from last night’s game.

Player Ratings

Szczesny – 6 – Great save in the first half to deny Ngog, got away with some dodgy footwork and could have been penalised late on for a challenge on Davies. I think he got a touch on the ball though.

Sagna – 8 – Superb. Best Arsenal player by a mile. Great to have him back and his return coincides with a rare clean sheet.

Mertesacker – 6.5 – Made a couple of important interceptions and had a steady game overall.

Koscielny – 6 – Given a hard time by Ngog in the first half and was lucky not to result in at least 1 goal. Not up to his recent form.

Vermaelen – 7 – Solid game from the Belgian, could have supported in attack more though.

Song – 4.5 – Awful second half. Gave the ball away at almost ever opportunity. But he wasn’t alone.

Arteta – 6 – Looked good in the first half as he dictated the play but faded in the second half as Arsenal lost control of midfield, and he started making sloppy passes.

Ramsey – 5 – Should have scored at least once in the first half but not for the first time this season, Ramsey fluffed his chances. Poor game overall. Needs to be dropped/rested.

Walcott – 5 – Missed a one-on-one chance in the first half then screwed a good chance wide late on. Really struggling at the minute.

Chamberlain – 6.5 – Lively in the first half, and made one terrific mazy run. Could have done better with a couple of chances but played in Theo for his one-on-one chance with a lovely ball. Looked dangerous.

Van Persie – 7 – On another day would have bagged at least two goals. Unlucky to hit the post then went agonisingly close with a stunning right-footed chip. Frustrating night for Robin.

Henry – 6 – No super-sub performance from Thierry this time. Didn’t make much of an impact during his 20 minutes.

Rosicky – N/A – Only on for 10 minutes, saw little of the ball.

Perhaps Wenger should start Arsharvin and Rosicky for Walcott and Ramsey. Sadly Henry hasn’t shown he is up to playing on the wing.

I would be tempted to put Rosicky on the left with Arsharvin in the centre ( and let them rotate in and out there) and AOC on the right. Back 5 were good and Conquelien Come in to give Song a rest/Wakeup and get him ready for Sunderland and the UEFA competition.

Hi Steve, I’m not a fan of Arshavin playing on either wing. I like the idea of him playing in place of Ramsey in the advanced central midfield role, he could have a real impact on the game from there.

Unless wenger changes his method arsenal will not and will never make top four. Instead of buying three quality players he stick to his statements. What is the need of keeping chamake, arshavim, now ramsy, wallcot has started playing nonsense up front. Now the transfer has finished wenger will blame himself.

Ramsey was poor as ever… doesnt wenger realize that he’s not a playmaker??????????

Exactly right John as rubbish Ramsey is
way overrated in the midfield ,losing the ball to often, lacks the physical
aspect of the game and will never be a
half decent Arsenal player,so why do Ar
senal fans delude themselves week in and out?

Ramsey is 20 years old and captain of Wales. To say he will never be half decent is ridiculous! He has shown he has promise but has played a lot of games and at the moment he is struggling.
Give Arshavin a shot in his proper position for a while!

      his 20 calm down
      we should blame the manager
      ramsey is 20
and we are expecting him to be great
      he needs to
where was v perise at the age of 20 ?

@ Don : it’s not about age.. Wenger himself always says that you can still be stupid at the age of 30.. and you can be good at 19… look at Jack,Ox.. are they older than Ramsey..??? look at chamakh, how old is he?? does he play well or is he good enough?? it’s not about AGE my fella..

i mean yesterday i was just left thinking what is Ramsey’s role in this squad? if its to support the main striker then Arshavin , park and even Ox is better. if its the play-maker we can manage but then of all players there right now rosicky is the most suitable and then definitely it cant be DMF or wings, so what is his role . u see i dont know why or how everybody will be wrong and only wenger will be right even after tests, analysis and really bewilds me. for arsenals sake hope we find a solution soon. love from Nigeria.

I know it John knows it and hopefully
others are aware of Ramsey,s rubbish performances ,so how much longer will Ar
sene continue playing him whilst Ben-Ay
oun sits on the substitues bench waiting
for a chance to get on the pitch ?

Its high time wenger should b serious or quits the club

Ramsey is just being over-played and in his wrong position.

He isn’t a playmaker. Far from it in fact.

Right now, Rambo should be seen as a back-up to Arteta in the midfield role and Arshavin should be given a go in the ‘hole’ behind RVP. At least he’s creative and can nick a goal. If not then Rosicky or Benayoun in there.

Three seasons ago Denilson looked really promising.
Ramsey looking “promissing” & “only 20” isn’t an excuse for a player that is currently a key member of the first team but looks slow in both pace & decision making. As for being the Welsh captain…is that supposed to be impressive???
Cesc was a first team player way younger; at 18/19 Wilshere was our player of the season 2010/11 & currently Ox (at 18) is making a greater contributionwhen he starts.

Ramsey might well become a very good player but we needed one at the start of the season in that position. Wenger should have replaced Cesc with a player who was up to the job now…not one that might be up to the job in 2 years time….& no, Arteta (though capable)isn’t that player either.

Ramsey has been poor lately and Tomas is much more likely to do better.
I do think Venger has misunderstood things of late. I think he is heading to the amasing Eruopa league because the two best English teams are there now. And Arsenal must try that one too.

Ramsey is a good player, but, not the creative force that we need. We need someone really skillful and creative at the front of the midfield to run at the defense. Even Fabergas was not the ideal candidate. We needed a Groetze or Hazard. Fab is doing so well at Barca because he has very creative and skillful attacking midfielders beside him.
Moreover our midfielders lack creative and cohesiveness. I feel that a skillful creative midfielder will complete the team especially now we have wonderful wingers, Ox, Walcott, Gervinho, Ryo. Even Santos and Bothelo.
