Arsenal Agree £10.9m Podolski Deal – Is He RVP’s Replacement?

Arsenal will sign German striker Lukas Podolski this summer after striking a £10.9m deal with FC Cologne, with the 26-year-old signing a four-year contract.

Arsenal will sign Lukas Podolski this summer after striking a £10.9m deal with Cologne, according to the Daily Mail.

The Mail revealed that the German striker agreed personal terms with the Gunners last week and all that was left was to agree a fee with his current employers, FC Cologne.

Today they have reported that Arsenal have now managed to settle on a deal believed to be worth £10.9m, despite Cologne initially holding out for nearer £18m, and the 26-year-old will now move to North London this summer.

Interestingly, the report also claims that the German will sign a four-year deal worth over £100,000 per week. Which if true, may be a sign that Arsenal are finally ready to change their restrictive wage structure and compete with the top clubs in terms of wages.

Personally, i am excited about this move as i rate Podolski highly. He is the perfect age and should be coming into his prime years. At just 26, he’s already clocked up over 90 caps and scored over 40 goals for Germany. That’s no mean feat, and he should be a real asset to the squad.

Van Persie replacement?

I only hope he is being brought in as a partner for Van Persie and not as a potential replacement. I’m sure the signing of Podolski is not only designed to bring a quality player to the club, but also as a sign of intent to show RVP that we mean business and are going to have a squad capable of challenging for trophies next season, in the hope of persuading him to sign a contract extension.

But should the Dutchman decide his future lies elsewhere, having Podolski on the books would give Wenger the perfect excuse not to then replace Van Persie, and we’d be back to having only one quality striker at the club.

Van Persie’s future is of critical importance to Arsenal and we’ve already got Man City shamelessly tapping him up in the media, and it’s only March! So i’m hoping we can persuade him to stay at the Grove and signing quality players like Podolski will go a long way to doing so.

I’m going to stay positive on this one and i can see a front three of Podolski, Van Persie and Chamberlain tearing it up next season!

Good news, now for the playmaker. Gourcuff or Sahin would be a good start

I don’t think podolski is RVP replacement in fact it’s the opposite, arsenal are showing him there intent by bringing in quality players now all we need is hazard or gotze and another top class centre back as metersacker is WAY to slow for English football, if arsenal loose RVP it will be the end of arsenal as we know it, we must spend big NOW!!!!! After loosing cesc and nasri all we have done is bring in second rate midfielders in arteta and the fella from Chelsea who I have no idea how to spell his name lol!!!! These players just arnt good enough for the special team that is arsenal fc!!!!!!

Is the Daily Mail our only source for this?!?

Lukas Podolski would not be a direct replacement for Robin van Persie, because the German forward drifts out wide left. So more of a replacement for Andrey Arshavin.

If Podolski is really coming to the Premier League next season this would be a massive buy for Arsenal because he is one of the best players in the world, regardless of the lack of media attention he gets playing for his beloved Koln. Top, top purchase.

i think he is rvp’s replacement, odemwingie will be the replacement for Chamakh/Bendtner and Campbell/Afobe will replace Park/Vela. Hoilett will be the replacement for Arshavin, Lansbury will replace Benayoun whilst Bartley will replace Squillaci. I think that Wenger will try to sign hazard and mvila as replacements for walcott and song if they leave. mannone and martinez will step up to replace fabianski and almunia

In no way is Podolski a replacement for Van Persie. Pod is out and out striker while VP is a bit of midfielder/winger who was moved to centre in absence of better but turned out to be brilliant. Pair VP Pod and Odemwingie and Eden Hazard and we will be back to challenging, Lansbury and Bartley will be additions to strengthen depth.

They sign him for hopping to keep RvP. He is not replacement he is reinforcement.

Arsene definitely doesn’t intend to lose RvP. The board better not see it as a chance to cash in. They’ll have a riot on their hands if they do something so stupid. With both the team will be genuinely world class but if RvP goes it’ll be a struggle to stay in the top 4.

To leave a club like Arsenal to win trophies is the most ridiculous reason i have ever heard, everyone knows the reason this season hasnt gone the way we would have liked and that is simply Injuries (shown in recent weeks).

but previous seasons have gone, players have left ‘to win trophies’??? players like Nasri, Ade, Clichy, Toure have left to Man City for this reason and my view is this
if your not good enough to win Trophies for Arsenal you shouldnt be good enough anywhere else. Nasri wont be winning the league Silva will, Toure wont win the league Lescott will. these players have left so that other players carry them to the title as they sip Champers on there crazy wages.
( oh yeh i didnt say cesc because he just went home)

Poldi is both a strike partner and a man who will take the goalscoring burden off RVP’s shoulders. The fact that RVP has scored almost half of our goals alone is signal enough that another player who will share that responsibility is needed. Now if only we can get a midfielder who can also bang in a dozen goals a season and a dozen or so assists then we’ll be a force.
