[Player Ratings] Arsenal 2-1 Newcastle: Watch Out Spurs!

Arsenal moved within one point of Spurs after an injury-time winner from Thomas Vermaelen secured a comeback to beat Newcastle 2-1. Here’s my player ratings

I’m not sure my heart can take much more of this! Another comeback and another late winner to move a point behind the scum. Third place is well and truly on!

The first ten minutes were pretty even but the visitors took the lead after some sloppy play at the back. Vermaelen’s poor pass eventually fell to Ben Arfa and Gibbs allowed the very left-footed Frenchman to cut inside and get a powerful shot off on his preferred foot which flew past Szczesny at his near post. Next time Gibbsy, just show him down his right side!

But we were level within seconds, Theo set up van Persie who took two delightful touches before firing home for 1-1. From this point on, it was all Arsenal. We knocked the ball about well, defended resolutely and created chances. But it took until the 94th minute until the winner arrived, Vermaelen charged in at the far post to fire home a Walcott cross to send the Emirates wild. Watch video highlights here.

This was another very good display by Arsenal against a decent Newcastle side who worked tirelessly. We ended up creating 23 chances to Newcastle’s 4, and had over 60% of the possession. It may have been a last-gasp winner, but we certainly deserved it. Here are my player ratings.

Player Ratings

Szczesny – 6.5 – Should maybe have done better with the opener. Got beaten too easily at his near post, but otherwise solid. Didn’t really have many other saves to make but kicking was good and collected a few crosses.

Gibbs – 6.5 – Very poor defending for the opener. Should never have allowed Ben Arfa to cut inside so easily to score. But got forward well in the second half as we pressed for a winner.

Vermaelen – 8.5 – Sloppy pass lead to Newcastle’s goal but apart form that moment, he was superb. His attitude is priceless. He never gives up and ran the full length of the pitch to pop up at the far post to score an injury-time winner.

Koscielny – 8 – Another fine display. Battled well with the awkward Ba and made several key interceptions. Forming a fine partnership with Vermaelen.

Sagna – 8 – Superb throughout the game as he and Walcott ran riot down the right hand side. He seems to work well with Theo

Song – 6.5 – Relatively quiet game from Song. He broke up play well but his forward passing was a little below par by his standards. Seemed to be holding his defensive position more and dropped back whenever Vermaelen went forward.

Arteta – 8 – A ‘busy’ performance from Mikel. He seemed to be everywhere and always showing for the ball. 94% pass completion rate.

Rosicky – 8.5 – Close to being MOTM for me and can’t see why Arsene decided to sub him with 15 minutes to go. At that point he was running the show in the middle of the park. Maybe he was tiring a little, i don’t know, but it was another terrific performance from Tomas.

Walcott – 9 – Excellent in the first half, and very good in the second. Everything was going down his wing and he set up both goals. More of the same please Theo!

Chamberlain – 6.5 – Indifferent display from AOC. He was very quiet in the first half but just as he began to get in the game and look a danger in the second half, he was subbed. Maybe trying a little too hard at times, and sliced a shot wide from a decent position.

Van Persie – 8 – On another day he’d have bagged a hat trick. Superb touch and finish for the equaliser and went close on at least three other occasions. Loved to see his passion at the final whistle as he was clearly fired up after the vital winner. Shows just what it meant to him.

SUBS:

Gervinho – 5 – Un-impressive cameo from Gervinho. Lost the ball on a couple of occasions, before fluffing an excellent chance to score at the far post. Needs to show more composure.

Ramsey – 6 – Brought on for Rosicky as we looked to use his energy to find a winner. He look eager and full of running and was tidy in possession, but still lacks that cutting edge in the final third.

Crowd – 9 – Special mention to the Emirates faithful. Another fine display and the volume level seems to have cranked up a notch or two in recent weeks. Got right behind the team and you can see the players react positively. Keep it up!

We deserved to win this one and i say this coz of our work rate and tim krul’s attitude didnt help…an injury time goal was punishment enough for him…walcott was definetly MOTM…#gunner.

Dont know what u were watching but RVP was the dick that started on krul and towards the end 3 other of our players everyone knows he is hot headed and needs to keep his mouth shut!

NO, we need more passion like this. He kept his head enough to stay on the pitch, but ruffled the oppos feathers.
I want a captain like this, one who cares what the result is and enjoys scoring, and has Arsenal in his veins without the false badge snogging.

Certainly. I think we lost this kind of attitude since Vieira departed.

Krul was time wasting from the 15th minute onwards. RvP ran the furthest yesterday, all to try and get Krul to kick the ball out. And when we scored the second Krul wanted to play quicker,it came back and bit him on the Arse. If Krul hadn’t time wasted their would only have been 3 minutes added time… When Krul was running to collect the ball RvP told “hey take your time…”

It’s either Rosicky or Walcott for MOM.. i chose Rosicky because he has as tremendous impact with just 75 mins of playing..

I think i’l have whatever liam is on…krul started time wasting in the first half and the hunger for goals that arsenal had could not allow that..he was very arrogant and that showed throughout the match…rvp was just trying to keep him on his toes. So please get your head outta yo ass will ya??

I thought gervinho was much better than a lousy 5! He bought the left hand side into play and created good chances holding up the ball for the amount of time he was on the pitch. Missed one good chance that no one was expecting to come his way and he deserves a little more credit!

I don´t 1-2 be Krul on Vermalen, cause hes a tremendous threat going forward and we all love that. But he only won 2 out of 9 takles i the 2. half… I think you´ve got ur ratings wrong cause Kozzer was involved much more and he won EVERYTHING including the second balls of Vermalens involvments. Kozzer is a BEAST!!
Rvp is the Captain we´ve been waiting for since Vieira left!

Also, Rosicky was clearly the MOTM!!

Szezza- 7, although he got beaten near post for the first goal, Ben Arfa shot could not have been better placed. solid game from our keeper.

Gibbs- 7, was beaten far to easily on the first goal but other then that showed great pace and allowed very few Newcastle attacks to come down his wing.

Koscielny- 8, Another great performance, showed pace, anticipation, vision definitely becoming one of the best in the PL

Vermaelen-7.5, had a reasonably solid game, gave the ball away a few times but scored the late winner

Sanga-8, Best RB in the PL in my opinion, he is a rock and never stops running up and down the right side. plenty of crosses and great link up play with walcott, Arteta and Rosicky

Song-7.5-8, In my view had a almost perfect game in the DM position. he broke up 85% of Newcastle attacks, sat and allowed Vermaelen and Koscielny to get forward time after time. does as much off the ball as he dose on it.

Arteta-8.5, showed a great passing range, i have in the past not been an admirer of Arteta due to his lack of creativity and reluctance to pass the ball forward but in the last couple of games he has shown what he can do looking forward.

Rosicky-9, well what can i say.. Brilliant performance from our new signing, pulling back the years and showing real heart. Tackles, Tricks and tantalising passing had all spectators open mouthed. if he had lasted 90mins would have got MOM.

Walcott-9, another great game from walcott, receives the ball soo much that in the past he would lose it 50% of the time but in this game he used the ball well and used his pace to destroy any thing in his path for the WHOLE 90mins.
which is i believe is walcotts most deadly weapon, his stamina, as fast after 85mins as he was after 5mins

Chamberlain-7, a disappointing game for chamberlain, couldn’t force the attacks to go down his wing so came inside to find the ball but then we lacked presence on the LW, was solid when got invoved and showed good pace as always but no sparkle today.

    subs.
Gervinho-7, came in were Chamberlain left off, was more attackive but was more careless, needs more one on ones to get his scoring boots back thats all.

Ramsey-6.5 came on and when had the ball used it well, but seemed lost on where to go in that AM position with Arteta, Song and the CB pushing forward at the end of the game. one for next season is Ramsey.

if you have read all of this i highly respect your patience hahahha

    Andre, no rating for RVP?

For what it’s worth, Rosicky was my M.O.M by a mile. Has anyone seen his stats from the game? Tackled like a world class DM destroyer all game!
    Superb
