Vertonghen - interested in Arsenal move

Tottenham target Jan Vertonghen has revealed his interest in signing for rivals Arsenal, according to the Daily Mail, but do the Gunners want or even need him?

The 24-year-old will have just one-year left on his contract this summer, and the signals are he won’t be signing an extension. The Mail report that both Tottenham and Newcastle have shown interest in the Ajax centre back, who is likely to be sold for around £10m.

However, it seems the Belgian stopper has his eyes on Tottenham’s North London rivals Arsenal, claiming he would gladly move to the Emirates and join what he called a “magnificent” club.

Vertonghen also revealed he was in the stands during the Gunners 3-0 win over AC Milan, after being invited by international team-mate Thomas Vermaelen. Here’s what the player is quoted as saying in the Mail:

‘Arsenal are a magnificent club and I hear a lot of good things about English football. If a club of Arsenal’s calibre can reach agreement with Ajax, then I will gladly go over.

‘I have instructed my agent carefully. ‘He knows which clubs I want to join, and Arsenal are one of them.’

‘I haven’t signed anything with them yet. But I went to watch them against Milan, together with my Ajax teammate Siem de Jong, after Vermaelen invited us. We had a few days off and profited from them.’

What a big flirt. He clearly want’s a move to the Emirates and Vermaelen is doing his bit to make it happen, but the question is; Do Arsenal want or even need him?

Vertonghen plays either centre back or left back. Arsenal currently have three central defenders in vice-captain Thomas Vermaelen, the ever-imporving Laurent Koscielny and German international Per Mertesacker. It would be tough for the Ajax man to displaced any of those three.

Left back is still an area i feel Arsenal need to improve upon, but Arsene Wenger seems to have a lot of faith in Kieran Gibbs, and the unfortunate Andre Santos saw his season interrupted by a serious ankle injury, but was only signed in the summer. So with two solid left backs on his books, Wenger is unlikely to bring in a third player to compete for just one place.

Unless somebody is sold this summer, i cant see where Vertonghen would fit in at the Emirates. He wouldn’t join just to be a utility cover player, and i don’t see him being good enough to command a first team place at centre back. I DO think he would be good enough to play at left back, but it would be very un-Wenger like to bring in a player and ‘block’ Gibbs’s development and Santos hasn’t been given a fair crack at it yet.

Despite his wish to join Arsenal, i can see Vertonghen moving to Tottenham instead. They certainly need a centre back. A long term replacement for King is desperately needed, and Dawson seems to be picking up serious injuries on a regular basis. Kaboul has been outstanding this season so a long-term partner for him is required, and Jan might be the man.

Arsenal do need Vertonghen yes we have Santos and Gibbs but I personally think Santos should be playing in a midfield role anyone that has seen him play for his old club knows he can play in midfield or even as a striker and as for Gibbs he is only one player he wont be able to play every single game we have scheduled so yes we need him.

Sorry but I have to say something, of course we need him! Have you not been watching any of our games this season? We’ve got one of the worst goal differences in the league! Also, Per Mert. is all very experienced but lacks the pace to keep up with the Premiership’s best strikers. Furthermore, this player can also play defensive midfield, a position I feel we definitely need to strengthen. Song has been great for us but again, he’s been too focused on attacking, forgetting about his defensive duties. It’s incredibly rare to find a player such as Vertonghen, who can play in so many positions and I think he’d definitely be used on a regular basis. Just check out his passing and movement against Man Utd, he has the Arsenal philosophy running through him! Signnnnn him up!

I agree in part. As a CB we don’t need him and not as cover for LB. However, I do agree he is cheaper than M’villa and we do need cover in the DM position.
I do think it’ll interfere with Coquelin’s development.

@robin. Arsenal have the joint third best goal difference. Our home defence is only bettered by 4 teams. For all the lamenting of the defence they have generally performed well with the notable exception of united at Old Trafford and Blackburn at Eawood park.

I think we need him. We can sell Djourou so we have two left-minded CBs for balance.

When Arsenal visit places like Stoke, and Blackburn I get a little worried they will get bossed around the park. This chap could fill that viera role and add some height and steel.

Vermaelen is more of a left back than vertonghen. whenever both are availqble and their is a need for a left back its always TV that steps in at left back.

as for the argument Arsenal need any player that is better than what we already have. As a centre back vertonghen is better than all of our current centre backs and is also a better DM than song but only because i think song is developing into a different type of player to an orthodox DM. Vertonghen would be one of my 5 signings

Nice article, but you totally forget to bring up the fact that Vertonghen can play DM. He’s not a left-back, and as a centre-back we already got Vermaelen and Koscielny. But Vertonghen as a defensive midfielder would be absolutely brilliant. He doesn’t even have to replace Song. They could play together. With the two of them in midfield, the defence would also be relieved a lot. Also, this season Vertonghen already scored 9 goals, in all competitions as a central defender. Imagine how much he would score as a defensive midfielder. With this season being almost entirely reliable on van Persie to score, Vertonghen would certainly aid in that departement.

I think arsenal should buy him. We only have 3 decent CBs. Djourou and Squillacci are awful and have no place in the arsenal team so Vertonghen would be good as cover or even challenging a first team place. The fact he can play left back or DM seriously boosts our squad. Its because of our lack of depth that has cost us so dear over recent seasons!

unfortunate that we got Mertesacker as I’d much prefer Vertonghen.
With TV, Koscielny, Mert and Djourou, there is no way we will buy Vertonghen. Spend the money on a good play maker like hazard instead.

You gotta loves these Belgians, Hazard and Vertonghen playing games. One day they preach their love for blue, and then for red. Want a nice bidding war, and a better salary.Teams go out and buy on desperation, as great talent is rare. I am a Spurs fan, but kudos to Wenger who will make sure that the player does fit – unlike my team who buys based on reputation (eg Bentley!). At this stage I think I would rather have Caulker from from loan!
