Transfer News: Wenger To Sell Four To Make Way For New Striker?
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger will sell up to four strikers to clear the way for the arrival of Montpellier striker Olivier Giroud, according to reports today.
Morning Gooners. Some transfer news for you today as the Daily Mail are reporting that Arsene Wenger will sell up to four players to clear the way for the arrival of Montpellier striker Olivier Giroud.
The report claims that despite the almost certain arrival of Lukas Podolski, Wenger still wants to add further attacking options to his squad and has identified the Frenchman as a potential signing. He has told Giles Grimandi to track the 25-year-old until the end of the season and report back his findings on the striker.
Giroud has become one of the hottest properties in French football after netting 14 goals last season and has already bagged 22 so far this term. The Mail suggest that Arsenal will face competition from Newcastle, Juventus and Bayern Munich for his signature should they decide to make a move in the summer.
In order to make room for the potential arrival of Giroud, Wenger is ready to sell four of his fringe strikers. Marouanne Chamakh, Carlos Vela, Nicklas Bendtner and Park Chu-young are all said to be in the firing line.
So far, this rumour sounds promising. Wenger has a history for signing talented French strikers, so i can see some truth behind this reported interest.
However, the story falls apart slightly when the Daily Mail go on to claim that Montpellier owner Louis Nicollin has placed an astronomical £50m price tag on the players head. £50m?! No chance. Arsene may very well want to buy the player, but there is no way he will pay that kind of money.
Of course Mr Nicollin is most likely just trying to scare of interest in his star player, or perhaps he’s starting the bidding high and will eventually accept a more realistic figure of £20m, but either way we all know Arsene won’t be interested at £50m.
