Van Persie - No Barca interest

Barcelona are not planning to sign Arsenal striker Robin van Persie this summer, according to club official Toni Freixa.

The newly crowned PFA Footballer of the Year and Football Writers Player of the Year will enter the final year of his contract this summer and has delayed negotiations over an extension until the end of the season. This has lead to uncertainty over his future and the speculation increased last week when Van Persie was spotted inside the Barca team hotel before their game with Chelsea.

However, Barca spokesman Toni Freixa is quoted by talkSPORT as saying that while they admire the Dutchman’s talents, the Catalan giants are not planning a summer move for the Arsenal ace.

“For Barça, any good player is of interest – and van Persie is a great player. But [we have] no intention of signing him for now,” said Freixa.

“He came to our hotel in London because he is Dutch and so is Ibrahim Afellay. They had a coffee together. He didn’t come to see us and there was no conversation.”

The news comes off the back of reports in this mornings press claiming that Juventus are lining up a £25m move for the 28-year-old in the summer.
