Arsenal have opened talks with Ajax over the signing of Tottenham and Chelsea target Jan Vertonghen, according to the Daily Mail.

After completing the signing of German striker Lukas Podolski on Monday, it seems Arsene Wenger is keen to get another piece of transfer business done early as the Mail claim he has stepped up his interest in defender Vertonghen after opening talks with Ajax.

The Belgian will enter the final year of his contract this summer and the report claims that Arsenal will look to beat off competition from Tottenham and Chelsea to land the 25-year-old, who is valued at around £7m.

It’s believed that Wenger will try to offload Sebastien Squillaci and Johan Djourou in the summer in order to make way for Vertonghen, who is able to play at centre back, left back as well as in defensive midfield.

Wenger’s early moves in the transfer market may surprise some Arsenal fans, especially after last summers deadline day rush, but many are suggesting that the Gunners boss is sending out a message to club captain Robin van Persie and he hopes the early signs of strengthening the squad will persuade the Dutchman to sign a contract extension at the Emirates.

don’t care what the name is across the back of the shirt, as long as wenger brings in some (at least 4) quality players…. i.e. not one or 2 who are just squad players… we want 1st team players and high end challengers on the bench itching to get on the pitch and give it their all. So yes Vertonghen fits that bill. think maybe we should be trying to get some premiership proven quality… fellaini, sigurdsson, dempsey, al habsi, micha richards(not saying that this is who i would buy just saying they are all hungry players) we have missed out on so much talent lately its unreal- Parker, cahill, mata, jones… the list is endless. so i no longer want to hear that i believe in this team so i won’t waste money on new players…. if that is the case then you can kiss goodbye to RVP… buying quality will breed quality. by the way i can only think of one loanee we need to bring back RYODINHO

On what basis should Arsenal let Djourou go? He was probably our best defender last season – which admittedly isn’t saying much – and he’s done just fine this year, the few times he’s been allowed to play. Is he our best defender? No. Not by a long shot. But if we want to challenge in 4 competitions next year, we need to be able rest and rotate players, especially among our injury prone defenders. Djourou will come in useful.
