Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has confirmed the club are interested in signing Jan Vertonghen, but insists no talks have taken place.

The Daily Mail claimed on Wednesday that Tottenham had opened talks with Ajax over their captain and suggested they were now regarded as favourites ahead of Arsenal and Newcastle to sign the highly-rated defender.

However, Spurs boss Harry Redknapp told Sky Sports News today that although he is interested in the 26-year-old, he has denied that talks have taken place between the two clubs. Redknapp also confirmed that there will be heavy competition for the players signature, and that Vertonghen is just one of several players he’s keeping an eye on.

“He is a good player, a player I have looked at and watched,” Redknapp told Sky Sports News.

“I think there are a lot of clubs interested in him though. So, that is all.

“We haven’t gone anywhere with it. We haven’t spoken to the club.

“He is just a player I have watched, along with a lot of other players.”

Vertonghen will enter the final year of his Ajax contract this summer and is expected to leave the club after captaining the side en route to winning the title this season. Previous reports had suggested Arsenal were in pole position to snap up the Belgian stopper, but it seems the fight for his signature is going to be as tight as the race for third!
