Arsenal Ace Hits Back At Transfer Rumours

One of Arsenal’s longest serving players has hit back at speculation suggesting he want’s to leave the club this summer. Find out who it is and what he said here

Johan Djourou

Arsenal defender Johan Djourou has denied reports he’s looking to leave the club, according to the Independent.

The Swiss centre back has fallen out-of-favour at the Emirates following the arrival of Per Mertesacker last summer and is now considered as fourth choice, with Thomas Vermaelen and Laurent Koscielny also ahead of him in the pecking order.

The 25-year-old only made 18 league appearances last term, with many of those out of position in the unfamiliar right back role.

His struggles have lead to speculation suggesting he was looking for a way out of North London, with Napoli thought to be monitoring his situation.

However, the defender has taken to Twitter to refute those claims and insisted that after 10 years at Arsenal, he is as committed as ever to the club. Djourou said on his official Twitter account:

“I just want to deny what has been in the press about my transfer. It isn’t true at all. I have been at Arsenal for 10 years now and I am always committed.”

Djourou looked short of confidence last season and playing him at right back certainly didn’t help. He’s not a bad fourth choice centre back, but you get the feeling that at 25, he’s now at the age when he needs to be playing regular first team football.

He doesn’t look likely to get that at the Emirates any time soon, so a move this summer still looks likely and the Italian game may suit him better.

So does that mean that Manuel Almunia was an ace? As were Marouane Chamakh, Ju Young Park, Abou Diaby and (the on loan) Denilson?

I’d rather Djourou than SQUILLACCI and at the moment he plays better than MERTESACKER. He’s certainly better than MIQUEL and probably on the same par if not a little better then BARTLEY. He’s a good 4th-5th choice centre back. He was playing very well until he got injured and he’s just starting to get back to form- Give him a break.

If we can keep him, we should. Fans who say things like “he’s useless” are just foolishly focused on our starting 11. But the back ups matter. Depth matters. Just because a player isn’t a star in sterling form doesn’t mean he is useless.

The best teams in the EPL and Europe have depth. That is how they are able to challenge in 4 seperately competitions. They have the depth to rest and rotate player, and to replace them when injuries occur. Not only that, depth on a team also creates a bit of competition among the players for starting spots.

Arsenal, more than any other top team, needs depth. So maybe Djourou isn’t the best, but he is not useless and we should keep him if we can.
