Benfica are interested in signing Arsenal outcast Nicklas Bendtner, according to talkSPORT.

The Premeria Liga runners up watched on as Bendtner bagged a brace against Portugal last week at Euro 2012 to take his tally to six goals in five matches against them, and talkSPORT claim this impressive form has persuaded Benfica to pursue Danish striker.

The report claims Benfica have already made contact with Arsenal about signing the 24-year-old on a permanent basis, but could face competition from Galatasaray who have also been linked with a move.

Bendtner’s future in North London is all but over and he spent the whole of last season out on loan with Sunderland, where he scored 8 goals in 30 appearances.

A permanent move to the Black Cats is unlikely but with Denmark eliminated from Euro 2012 on Sunday night following a 2-1 defeat to Germany, the striker will decide on his long-term future in the coming weeks with Benfica leading the chase to sign him.

FT Verdict

It’s almost certain Bendtner will leave the Emirates this summer but I’m not sure a move to Benfica would be best for him.

While he’s not the up there with Messi or Ronaldo, despite what he might say, Bendtner still has the attributes to become a very good forward. I firmly believe he’d do well in the Premier League at the right club, and I hope he stays in the Prem and proves a few doubters wrong. But a change in attitude would be required!
