Chamakh - set for chop

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger will continue to reshape his squad this summer by selling up to eight players.

The Daily Mail claim that after completing the signings strikers Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud, Wenger will now turn his attention to cutting the ‘deadwood’ from his squad, with Andrey Arshavin, Denilson, Sebastiean Squillaci, Carlos Vela, Nicklas Bendtner, Marouane Chamakh, Park Chu-young and Johan Djourou all in the firing line.

According to the Mail, deals that would have seen Denilson  and Carlos Vela make their loan moves to Sao Paulo and Real Sociedad permanent have fallen through, while the potential transfer of Sebastien Squillaci to French side Bastia has also broken down.

Arsenal still hope they can resurrect those three deals while also trying to find buyers for five other squad players.

The difficulty is that many of the players are on inflated wages that other clubs are struggling, or are unwilling, to match leaving the Gunners having to compromise and lower the transfer fees.

FT Verdict

Selling the ‘deadwood’ will not only ease the clubs wage bill but also generate further transfer funds for Wenger to spend. A defensive midfielder and a defender who can cover at left back should still be on the priority list, while i also feel we need a proper play-maker.

GK – Szchzney / New Purchase

RB – Sagna* / New Purchase
RCB – Koscielny / Per Mertersacker / Miquel
LCB – Vermaelen / Bartley / New Purchase
    LB – Gibbs / Santos

    CDM – Song / M’Vila OR Capoue / Coquelin / Santos (LDM)
    RAM – Song** / Arteta / Ox
    LAM – Wilshere / Rosicky / Arsharvin***

    LW – Gervinho / Podolski / Miyaichi
ST – van Persie / Giroud / Podolski
    RW – Walcott / Ox / Miyaichi

Sagna*: Yes, he’s world class. But with two breaks in one season on the same leg? We need someone who can be steady to hold the role, and not makeshift like le Coq etc
Song**: He’s been a great assist giver in 2011-12, and I feel he’s got more of an all-round midfueld mentality and shouldn’t be expected to just hold the defensive line. Let him be openly play if the tactic allows.
Arshavhin***: I always felt Arshavin was misplaced quality on the team, and I feel the Euro 2012 showed it. IF we keep him – let him try the attacking midfield position more.

Also, I feel it’s worth allowing RvP and Podolski (very experienced scorers AND assisters) to try deep attacking midfield too.
