Chelsea begin the defence of their champions league trophy tonight as they welcome Italian giants Juventus to Stamford Bridge.
The Blues made history by winning Europe’s elite competition for the first time with a penalty shoot-out win over Bayern Munich last season but couldn’t have asked for a much harder task than facing Juventus in their Group E opener.
The ‘Old Lady’ won the Serie A title after going unbeaten last year, an unbeaten run which now stands at an incredible 42 games, so they will be a stern test for Roberto Di Matteo’s men.
However, Chelsea will also head in to the game in confident mood after making an impressive start to the new season which sees them sit top of the premier league table after four games.
Chelsea boss Di Matteo is able to call upon captain John Terry and defender Ashley Cole after the pair came through Saturday’s test with Queens Park Rangers feeling no effects from the ankle knocks that ruled them out of England action a week early.
Midfielder John Obi Mikel is also available despite picking up a back injury at the weekend, while Juan Mata is expected to be recalled after being rested against QPR.
Juventus are without Simone Padoin, Simone Pepe and Lucio who are all out through injury.
Kwadwo Asamoah is pushing for a start after scoring at the weekend but Nicklas Bendtner will once again have to make do with a place on the bench and is yet to feature for Juve since making a loan move from Arsenal.
Both sides go into the game in good form and this should make for an entertaining affair. Chelsea’s home form was superb last season having won all six of their champions league matches at Stamford Bridge and we can see them beating Italians tonight…just. Chelsea 2-1 Juventus.
