Bacary Sagna is set to become the next big name to leave Arsenal after talks over a new contract collapsed, according to the Daily Mail.

The French defender has just 18 months to run on his current deal and the club has been in talks with his representatives to try and tie him down to fresh terms. However, it’s understood Sagna has been left shocked after the Gunners only offered him a 12-month extension with no increase on his current £60,000-a-week wages.

Sagna turns 30 in February so this is likely to be the last big contract of his career and he was looking for a long-term deal with a substantial increase to his salary. But the clubs hierarchy are concerned over the right-backs recent injury problems, having suffered two broken legs in the last 18 months, and are refusing to meet his demands.

Sagna angered the boss earlier in the season when he voiced concerns over the club continually selling it’s star players and it seems he’s set to follow the likes of Robin van Persie out the Emirates exit door, and the Mail claim he’s already told friends he’s off at the end of the season.

This is becoming a familiar story at Arsenal. While it’s difficult to criticise the club for their concerns over Sagna’s injury record, when we see players like Chamakh and Squillaci on similar money to what Sagna’s being offered, it does make you wonder.

The closer we get to January the more likely it seems that Theo Walcott isn’t going to sign a new deal either so we could lose Walcott and Sagna in quick succession. Two more first team players out the door and no doubt replaced by slightly lower quality players. This has been the story at Arsenal over the last 5 years and won’t change until the club alters it’s wage structure. Simple.

He earns more in a year than most in a lifetime of work.
However even in the skewed world of football, I can’t see why he is worth more.
Flog him, we do everyone else, you have to have a wage structure even if it limits ambition.

Sorry but I get tired of hearing about Chamakh being on too much money…he came over for free which is why they are paying him more than others and not because of his quality or lack there of…
