Chelsea have been hit by an injury blow with midfielder Oriol Romeu ruled out for six months after undergoing surgery on a serious knee injury, the club have confirmed today.

The Spaniard suffered the injury during the first half of Saturday’s match with Sunderland at the Stadium of Light and was immediately ruled out of the European champions trip to Japan to play in the World Club Cup.

Instead, Romeu returned to London for assessment and the Blues have now revealed the extent of the injury, confirming he’s been forced to have anterior cruciate reconstructive surgery. A statement confirmed the news on this morning:

“Oriol Romeu underwent anterior cruciate reconstruction surgery and medial meniscus repair yesterday (Monday). He is expected to be out for six months.”

The midfielder has made 33 appearances for Chelsea since making the move from Barcelona in 2011 but he wont be adding to that tally any time soon as this injury all but ends his season.

Do Chelsea need to replace Romue in January, or do they have enough cover to cope?
