Chelsea could miss out on Metalist Kharkiv star Taison despite agreeing terms over an £8.5m deal, with the midfielder now understood to be close to sealing a move to Shakhtar Donetsk, according to the Sun.

The report claims the European champions agreed an £8.5m fee with Metalist for the midfielder last month and were on the verge of signing the exciting 24-year-old after agreeing personal terms and securing a work permit.

However, a deal was never formalised and the Sun claims the reason is due to the clubs new owner  refusing to sell to Blues owner Roman Abramovich and is now demanding the full £12.4m release clause in Taison’s contract.

The report suggests that previous negotiations had been smooth between Abramovich and previous Metalist owner Oleksandr Yaroslavsky, but the club was sold to Serhiy Kurchenko at the end of December and the new man is said to be refusing to do business under the original terms of the deal.

The newspaper claims that Taison’s representatives were in talks last night with Shakhtar Donetsk and a move to the Ukrainian champions is now expected to be completed in the coming days.

Quite the turn-around, isn’t it? Taison looked odds-on to move to West London only days ago but now it seems Chelsea may miss out altogether if the Sun’s report is accurate. Of course the Blues may yet decide to re-negotiate with the new owner and resurrect the deal, so all is not lost yet Chelsea fans.

Let’s see how this progresses because until he puts pen-to-paper there is still a chance he could end up at Stamford Bridge.
