Arsenal Player Ratings vs Liverpool: Wilshere & Walcott Lead Fightback

By on January 30, 2013

Arsenal came from 2-down to draw 2-2 with Liverpool on Wednesday night with Luis Suarez and Jordan Henderson putting the visitors in control before Oliver Giroud and Theo Walcott pulled the Gunners level. Here are player ratings from Arsenal fan ‘loyd the Gooner’.

Theo Walcott

Szczesny 5. 6’4” and won’t come and catch the ball. Hasn’t ‘trained on’ as we hoped. He is young for a keeper and has time on his side. Overall this season he has gone backwards. Thinks he is better than he is, humility son! Go and speak to Bob Wilson, David Seaman, Jens Lehman…all confident, none arrogant (well maybe Jens)!

Sagna 5. His distribution was generally poor. Fell over for the first Liverpool goal and for the rest of the 1st half was very bad. In the second he tried but still couldn’t pass properly. No lack of effort though.

Mertesacker 3. His lack of pace was a liability throughout. The manager talks about waiting for the right quality of player to sign…! Did I miss something? Yes he has had a few half decent games but we could have had any number better than him. What was he doing turning his back on Suarez for the first goal? Hung a leg out for the second Liverpool goal. You can’t fool the fans, Arsene.

Vermaelen 7. When you play most of the game with Santos and Mertesacker around you effectively you have three jobs to do. Did them all reasonably well. At fault for the first though.

Gibbs 6. Ok when on the pitch.

Ramsey 6. At times you thought this role might suit him then you see an opportunity to play a telling pass from deep and he fluffs it…not sure. At 28 he may own that role but we need a holding man now!

Wilshere 9. Non stop effort. Drove us forward. Classy. At times in the second half you could have been watching Iniesta. Well played Jack!

Cazorla 7. Poor first half, very good in the second. This is becoming a trend now. Is it the half time tea?

Walcott 8. Ok should have scored early on but what a finish. Stretched them with his pace. Theo is developing well now and I for one was wrong about this boy. Very pleased he is staying.

Giroud 7. Decent showing. Gives us the big man option, nice goal but immobile at times. His attitude was great and signs overall are good. We will need to put the right players around him though.

Podolski 7. His quality around the box is becoming more obvious now. Doesn’t like the ugly side of the game and that causes problems at times for teammates. Yet another that needs the balance to be right.

Subs

Santos. Can you give a minus mark? The serious side of it is the insult to the fans, the ones that go. That this man is allowed to wear the shirt is an affront to us. Why if Arsene Wenger is so good at the sports science/diet side of the game is Santos so fat and unfit? Why hasn’t he put the effort in himself to at least look like a Premier League player? Even when you are injured you can eat properly!

I’d say Ramsey did decently well on the pitch today given the circumstances. Which long range passes did you think he fluffed? I saw him make a couple good passes from deep to Sagna in the first and to Wilshere in the second but I missed the passes you say he fluffed up. His work rate is awesome too, managed 135 passes today, most of any Arsenal player. I’d give him a 7 rather than a 6.

As per usual Jack showed up; 9 is too high but he was our driving force as always – the way that man dribbles forward is beyond me. And his engine is great. I’d say 8-8.5.

Vermalen should have done better with his clearance for the first one, 7 is generous I’d give him a 6-6.5.

Agreed on Giroud, Walcott and Poldi they were all threatning upfront today though that final finish for Walcott was a beaut. Wish Giroud got that final leg in for the Poldi ball in but I acknowledge it had a deflection too.

Santos. What. a. terror. In all the wrong sense. Not even going to bother with a rating.

Also agree on really disappointing stuff from Sagna, Mertasacker and Szczesny.

He had no chance to make a tackle on Henderson if had he tried he would of fouled him

For the first goal, Sagna’s slip was just unfortunate, it can happen to anyone at any time, but the ball into the box was nothing – all Tommy had to do was make half-decent contact and their chance was gone. How he can get a 7 while Mert can apparently take more of the blame for that goal is beyond me. Mertesacker is an extremely consistent and reliable performer in the sense that you know what you’re going to get. He’s always going to struggle against pacey players but he generally does quite well. Vermaelen has made as many costly individual errors as anyone at the club, probably more, and yet manages to avoid the criticism for some reason. He epitomizes the defensive “nervousness” that Wenger talks about and yet he’s the captain of the bloody club. How many more times? He’s only even in the team because he’s perceived as a leader, but he’s not half as good as Koscielny.
The Henderson goal was just a joke. He got lucky but we looked scared of him for some unfathomable reason.

Agree that Mertesacker cops more flak than he deserves and that Vermaelen does make individual errors too. Conversely, his place in the side is ensured beyond the fact he is a “perceived” leader, you can’t doubt that he is a leader. He is simply in the team because he is the clubs best defender. He covers both his Left Back and fellow Centre Back when need be, if Mertesacker is out-paced for example. Koscielny is good, but he isn’t comparable to Vermaelen and makes more nervous mistakes than him too.

I will concede, however, that despite the incredibly unfortunate injury to Gibbs, Santos should not have been played. Instead Koscielny should have been subbed on to play Left-Centre Back and Vermaelen shifted to Left Back. He played there earlier this season and while we still missed Gibbs, he was miles – closer to light years – ahead of Santos.

Come on, Vermalen is no leader!! Those of you that think Vermalen is our best defender know little about defending. Vermalen is unawere and give defenders too much room. He is easily fooled aswell. He lacks the smartness. Koscielny on the other hand is a beast. A real winner. He lets no one past him, and the opponents fear him. Why he is on the bench is beyond me. He is miles – closer to light years – ahead of Vermalen

I think Rambo did really well tonight, he has a bit more time in that role in front of the defense and I thought he worked his socks off! Kept things ticking nicely in the middle and wasn’t as backwards as normal! Not sure how you can mark Tommy V quite that high, to be honest I thought the back 4 and Chesney needed shooting! Was a shambles back there.

Jack is going to be a legend…..well, until Wenger sells him! Ran the show again and is the only one who drives at defenses and really opens them up. If we could play for 90 minutes rather than just the second half we’d be top of the league, must have some serious oranges in that dressing room at half time!

Thought Ramsey played well made some good long range passes and some energetic tackles, have been impressed with him in his new role. Didn’t think Santos did too bad aswell, always was an option for a pass, pity so many Boo-Boys get on his back and destroy a players confidence. I think confidence is a real issue at Arsenal too much negativity from fans, as the difference between first & second halves showed.

its not Ramsey’s fault he just aint up to the top level
he gives the ball away too often and passes sideways and backwards most of the time

I am concerned about Sagna, he offers us very little going forward and mistakes are starting to creep into his game

When Gibbs got injured cozza should have come on and vermalean moved to the left or coqeluin should played there.

Our attack is not a problem in all competitions this season we are only 7 behind Man U. They have scored 81 and we have scored 74.

The problem for Arsenal is our defence.

We need to say goodbye to santos as he is a poor player and sagna too as he just doesn’t seem as good as he used to be.

Jenkinson and yennaris shoul be the 2 right backs
Gibbs should carry on with left back duties and whilst we look for adequate cover coqeluin should take that duty on.
Eisfield should get his chance either through the centre of midfield or on the wings. That boy makes things happen.
When diaby is fit he is awesome but 2 games back and he is injured again and we are not even out of the transfer window which beats his normal record of one week after the transfer window is closed.

We should have bought m’villa when we had the chance. Lucas biglia would be a perfect defensive midfielder or dare I say it let’s buy song back.

Mertesacker is a slow but he is a great tackler and doesn’t take risks. He is also the reason we got Poldolski and will persuade young German talent to play for us in the future. Hopefully hummels, goetz (sorry for the spelling) and others.

We also need a goal keeper like butland, steckenburg or begovic.

Those are realistic buys too that would make us contenders again.

    What defence?
Need a complete overhaul, replace FBs and PM as the top priorities. Will not finish in top 4 because of this. Good ratings generous ? Yes! Of course when you fight back from 0-2.
