Dutch Midfielder Rules Out Arsenal Move

Dutch midfielder Adam Maher insists he has no intention of joining Arsenal when he leaves AZ Alkmaar in the summer, despite his boss tipping him for a move.

Despite the transfer window now being closed there will still be plenty of gossip doing the rounds in the newspapers, so we’ll keep you up-to-date with the latest transfer rumours. Today, Adam Maher rules out a move to Arsenal.

Dutch midfielder Adam Maher insists he has no intention of joining Arsenal when he leaves AZ Alkmaar in the summer, according to talkSPORT.

The 19-year-old has been in superb form for Alkmaar this season and talkSPORT claim the Dutch outfit slapped a £8.5m price tag on his head during the January transfer window with PSV among the clubs chasing the exciting midfielder.

His boss Gartjan Verbeek told Sky Sports News last week that despite the interest from Holland, the youngster should move to Arsenal and follow in the footsteps of Robin van Persie:

“I think Arsenal is a perfect club for him. With Arsene Wenger, who worked with young talents like him before.

“He can get the most out of himself at Arsenal. Look at Robin van Persie, he joined Arsenal at a young age and look what he achieved.”

However, while Maher expects to be on the move in the summer he has ruled out moving to north London, insisting he wants to remain in the Eredivisie and has his eye on either PSV or Ajax. When asked about his future and specifically the possibility of a move to the Gunners, Maher is quoted as saying by talkSPORT:

“In the summer I expect there will be a realistic bid. It is certain that I will be leaving.”

“I have already said that I do not want to go [to Arsenal]. I want a good stay in the Netherlands, at least another two to three years – I am only 19.

“PSV is a nice club, but on the other hand I live in Amsterdam. Last summer and last winter I indicated I want to go to PSV, but PSV was the only club that wanted to sign me. But I can also play for Ajax [too].”

I must admit I’ve not seen a lot of Maher so don’t know what we’ll be missing out on, but personally I won’t be getting too upset about not signing another up-and-coming youngster. Arsenal need some proven quality in the summer so while Maher may be a talent, I’d like to see more established names coming to the Emirates anyway.
