Arsenal Plot Summer Move For Liverpool Target As Wenger Looks To Shore Up Defence
Arsenal are plotting a summer swoop for long-term Liverpool target and current Swansea City captain Ashley Williams who could be available for £8m this summer
Despite the transfer window now being closed there will still be plenty of gossip doing the rounds in the newspapers, so we’ll keep you up-to-date with the latest transfer rumours. Today, Arsenal are linked with Liverpool target Ashley Williams.
Arsenal are plotting a summer swoop for long-term Liverpool target and current Swansea City captain Ashley Williams, according to the Independent.
The report claims Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has finally grown tired of his sides lacklustre performances at the back and has earmarked a new centre-back as a priority this summer, with Williams seen as the perfect addition due to his leadership and organisational skills.
The Independent claim Arsenal may face competition from Liverpool for his signature, with Brendan Rodgers are also believed to be tracking Williams and is keen to link up with the Welshman again after their time together at Swansea but the duo may have to pay around £8m to secure his services.
Arsenal’s frailties at the back were exposed once again on Sunday as their defence was sliced open twice during a 2-1 defeat to Tottenham, with Thomas Vermaelen and Per Mertesacker culpable for both goals, so a new centre-back looks to be on the cards this summer. But Liverpool may also be on the look-out for a centre-back with Jamie Carragher due to retire at the end of the season, and Williams would be an excellent addition for either team.
The 28-year-old is now enjoying his second superb season in the Premier League and was a key figure in helping Swansea lift the Capital One Cup at Wembley last month.
