[Player Ratings] Swansea 0-2 Arsenal: Cazorla MOTM But Gunners Back Four Solid Again

Arsenal had to dig deep to beat Swansea City 2-0 at the Liberty Stadium on Saturday afternoon thanks to goals from Monreal and Gervinho. Here are player ratings

Santi Cazorla Arsenal

What a HUGE win Gooners. I hoped the Bayern result would be catalyst for a more consistent run-in and this was an excellent start. The game was easy on the eye with both sides keen to play football. The first half was pretty even with both sides creating a couple of half chances but we totally dominated the second period. Swansea didn’t create a thing and the most Fabianski had to do was deal with one corner.

We weren’t at our free-flowing best though and had to dig deep to grind out the win. With the exception of Cazorla, and the Oxe in the first half, our front play was very average and it was the introduction of Gervinho and Aaron Ramsey that arguably changed things in the final third.

The back four were once again solid and back-to-back clean sheets have been rare so far this season. Let’s hope this kind of form continues during the coming weeks and it’s going to be difficult for Arsene Wenger to recall his captain at this rate. But he can’t complain if the teams keeping clean sheets, can he? In the end, late goals from Monreal and Gervinho sealed a vital three points and we’re now breathing down the necks of the top-four. Here are my ratings:

Arsenal Ratings:

Fabianski – 6 – Had very little to do. Swansea didn’t have a shot on target throughout the entire ninety minutes. Flapped at one corner and his kicking suspect in the first half, but another clean sheet will only boost confidence. Going to be tough for Szczesny to regain his place.

Jenkinson – 8 – Another superb display from Jenko. He was bombing up and down the right wing and his pace is a huge asset. Positional sense is improving with every game also. Only issue was a terrible ball across his own box which led to Michu almost scoring in the first half, but we’ll forgive him for that.

Monreal – 7.5 – Took his goal well and what an important strike it could turn out to be. Solid at the back and got forward a lot more in the second half. Settled in well.

Mertesacker – 7 – Don’t remember the commentator saying his name which is what you want. He got on with his job and put in an assured display with little fuss. Looks far more comfortable next to Koscielny.

Koscielny – 7 – Another composed display at the back. His distribution was poor at times but his pace and covering across the back-line is important to our play.

Diaby – 4 – Looked well short today. His passing was sloppy on several occasions and he pondered on the ball for too long. Looks low on confidence and fitness. Rightly subbed.

Arteta – 7 – Steady as always. The midfield looked a bit open, especially in the first half, but he sat deeper after the break and we took control of the game.

Cazorla – 9 – They couldn’t get near him. Close control is scary at times and he pretty much ran the game in the second half. Went close with a well hit volley early on but his incisive passing was key to the win. Dare i say he looks far more comfortable when Jack’s not playing?

Chamberlain – 7.5 – Hit the bar early on then clipped it again just before half time with a dipping 20-yard effort. Was very positive and arguably our best player in the first 45 but faded a bit after the break. Unlucky to be subbed.

Walcott – 5 – Anonymous for large parts, particularly in the first half. Had a couple of runs on the break but wasn’t to be his day. Subbed late on.

Giroud – 6 – Played off scrapes really as the service was largely poor but he still worked hard and put himself about. It was the big Frenchman’s lay-off that found Monreal for the vital opener.

Gervinho – 7.5 – Superb cameo to be fair to the lad. Created a couple of half chances before he put the game to bed with a neat finish late on.

Ramsey – 7 – Offered far more than Diaby in terms of effort and energy in midfield. Nice assist for the second as well.

Gibbs – N/A

You can watch the goals from Swansea 0-2 Arsenal here.

So a big result that puts the pressure firmly on Tottenham and Chelsea ahead of their games with Fulham and West Ham on Sunday.

Were u surprised how Diaby played? This is the true Diaby mind u, sloppy and slow.

When Wilshere plays, I think it complicate more at times..

Carzola feels more comfirtable and produce exceptional display in absence of jack. Yeah well we had a good game

I think you are unfair with the diaby performance. He did pretty well as the game progresses not minding his sloppy begining. Walcot offered nothing to the team throughout his stay on the pitch so you rated him above what he should get i give him 3.

I think santi prefers playing in the middle and when jacks around it means he’ll be shifted to the wings, where he’s not at his best. But overall i liked the way we played, just missed lil mozart. Who’s better, gibbs or Monreal? Anyone?

I’m sorry but one good offer over £12m for Walcott sell i’m.He either makes or scores an occasional goal and for the rest of the game he’s absolutely useless.A complete passenger.I put more effort into a game sitting on my arse watching the Arsenal than he does over 90 minutes playing.Sell him this summer and then we can go back to playing with 11 men again.

great result for us today,oh i wonder about all the arsenal fans who expectedr us to drop points against swansea??also the spuds have lost 2 games in row including against inter, are we to expect more losses from them?they can try to convince anyone but they really are a one man team!

I’m must say……. Cazorla shud be be givin that slot in tha middle…. He is superd there, wen he can guh left or right which ever suits him at the current moment… But wat about Jack??!!! Sigh… Cazorla doesn’t enjoy playing on the wings, its obvious!!!!!

Cazorla has the better touches and definately more important that shot out of the area that is a great threat….. Wenger buy a DM and put jack at the centre and allow cazorla to play right behind the striker…. They both love the middle

Walcott cost is the first game against Bayern Munich. He kept on vacating his position on the right and tairing into the Center forward spot as soon as we got possession. Leaving Jenks completely exposed. All for personal glory.
Before he signed his contract he said it wAs on his mind a lot bother should give him a rolling weeks contract if that’ gets gets the best out of him, as since he signed I don’t think he has scored.

I think the diaby rating is all wrong, when he came in to the game arsenal begun to boss midfield ( about 15 minutes in) and he was the undercover stand out performer that enable the rest of the team to perform decently and not be pressurised.

Diaby absolutely slowed down d midfield making it difficult for carzola and making or wingers to fall 2 deep. The difference showed wen ramsey was introduced.

Pretty much agree with all the ratings except maybe Giroud: true he didn’t get much service but his ‘lay off’ for the first goal was more of a fluffed control and he always looks a bit slow in controlling the ball. Diaby hasn’t really done much since Liverpool away. Shame not to see Rosicky get a game. We need him at his best for the run in and he needs playing time to get there.

Fair enough analysis of performance, but let us remember this a very competent swansea side and the first goal could have been called for a foul earlier in the game so a bit of luck about that one. But now on to the good news Tottenham have lost their second league game and third game on the trot, beating reading next weekend would close the gap to 1 point with tottenham playing swansea another difficult game for them meaning by the time we play W B A we could be a point behind and a game in hand which happens to be the everton game on the 16th. however spurs play chelse and everton when we play w b a and norwich two huge games for us to get a minimum of four points from six would be better but with chelsea everton and tottenham likely to shoot each other in the foot we could head into final 4 games with a three point lead.
