Hamburg goalkeeper Rene Adler has welcomed interest from Arsenal saying it’s an ‘honour’ to be linked with the north Londoners, according to the Daily Star.

A new goalkeeper is thought to be on the cards this summer with none of our current crop able to cement themselves as No.1 this season. Wojciech Szczesny has held the gloves for almost two years but saw himself dropped to the bench last month after a string of below par displays, leading to question marks over his future.

Lukasz Fabianski did OK between the sticks in Szczesny’s absence, but still doesn’t look like the long-term solution to our goalkeeping problems and a host of names have been linked with a move to the Emirates in recent weeks.

The latest player to have caught Arsene Wenger’s eye is Hamburg stopper Rene Adler with the Star claiming the boss has had him watched several times over the past few months and was lining up a cut-price move at the end of the season.

The 28-year-old has now admitted to German publication Bild that he’s honoured to be linked with Arsenal but he won’t be letting the specualtion over his future distract him from finishing the season well with Hamburg:

“For any player, it is an honour [to be linked with Arsenal],”

“It is something that inspires me even more, but it is not distracting me.” Adler told Bild.

Adler only moved to Hamburg last summer having spent 12 years at Bayer Leverkusen but has been unable to prevent the club from having a poor season in the Bundesliga this campaign, and with Thorsten Fink’s men currently sitting eight in the table they face a fight to qualify for Europe next season.

Hamburg sporting director Frank Arnesen is quoted as saying that it’s ‘known that Arsenal are looking for a goalkeeper’, but insists we have not yet been in touch over Adler’s availability.

“It is known that Arsenal are looking for a goalkeeper. But we have not been contacted,” Arnesen is quoted as saying by the Star.

So it looks like a new keeper will be arriving this summer but is Adler the right man for the job? Personally, I’d rather we went for someone like Asmir Begovic but Wenger will make his decision and we’ll have to back whoever he brings in.
