Despite the transfer window being closed there is still plenty of gossip doing the rounds in the newspapers so we’ll keep you up-to-date with the latest transfer rumours. Today, Arsenal open talks for Gonalons.
Arsenal have entered talks with Lyon over the potential signing of £15m-rated midfielder Maxime Gonalons, according to the Metro.
The report claims Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has been a long-term admirer of the Frenchman’s and has now made the tough-tackling midfielder his ‘No.1 summer transfer target’ after having him scouted on several occasions this season.
I’ve called for the club to invest in an athletic central midfielder all season and it seems the man we’re after is Gonalons, with the Metro reporting that Wenger has now made contact with Lyon and opened talks over a potential deal at the end of the season.
The newspaper suggests the Ligue 1 outfit have made it clear they’ll consider selling the 23-year-old to a foreign club as long as their £15m valuation is met, although any deal could prove difficult with the boss believed to have a tense relationship with Lyon president Jean-Michael Aulas.

I feel a defensive midfielder is a must this summer as we desperately need an aggressive force to compliment the talents of Jack Wilshere, Santi Cazorla and Mikel Arteta in central midfield. Arteta has done a fine job but isn’t an orthodox defensive midfielder and I think Gonalons would be a great addition to the squad.
He’s a good passer, not afraid to put himself about, is a good age, reasonably priced and has plenty of experience under his belt. Let’s see how this progresses as we approach the summer window but I’m hoping the boss can get a deal done early.
