Arsenal Linked With Surprise Move For Sven Ulreich
Arsenal have been linked with a move for Stuttgart goalkeeper Sven Ulreich as Arsene Wenger continues to search for a new goalkeeper, according to talkSPORT.
With the summer transfer window set to re-open, there is plenty of gossip doing the rounds in the newspapers so we’ll keep you up-to-date with the latest transfer rumours. Today, Arsenal are linked with Sven Ulreich.
Arsenal have been linked with a surprise move for Stuttgart goalkeeper Sven Ulreich as Arsene Wenger continues to search for a new goalkeeper, according to talkSPORT.
We’ve been linked with practically every keeper under the sun in recent months after the future of Wojciech Szczesny was thrown into doubt following his demotion from the first team back in March. Wenger claimed he was being ‘rested’ due to mental fatigue, but it was clear to most that the young Pole was dropped due to his inconsistent form this season.
A new goalkeeper appears to be on the cards this summer with an experienced and reliable No.1 understood to be a top priority. The latest name to have caught the bosses eye is Stuttgart’s Ulreich with talkSPORT claiming Wenger is keeping a close eye on 24-year-old ahead of a potential summer move.
The report suggests the keeper, who’s contract runs until 2017, will command a significant transfer if he’s to be sold at the end of the season with Stuttgard believed to be reluctant to sell the 6 foot 4 inch stopper.
Ulreich has been with Stuttgart his entire professional career and broke into the first team set up in 2008 but really cemented himself as No.1 in the 2010/11 season. He’s gone on to make over 100 appearances for the Bundesliga outfit and although he’s yet to earn his first cap for the senior international side, he’s represented the under-21’s and is touted as a potential future star in his homeland.
Personally, I feel a move for Ulreich makes little sense as he wont be a significant upgrade on Szczesny – if at all. He’s of similar age and seems to be on about the same kind of level in terms of where he’s at in his career.
We need an experienced head to come in and push Szczesny for the No.1 jersey, and also be someone he can learn from in training. I still regard Szczesny as a potential long-term No.1 at Arsenal and wouldn’t want another youngster to come in as we’ll never be able to keep them both content.
Someone like Cesar from QPR would be a good buy in my opinion. Vastly experienced, played in the Premier League, wouldn’t command a huge fee and would stick around for a couple of years before Szczesny’s ready to take over. But we’ll have to see what the boss does in the summer….
