Luis Suarez Escapes Further Action For Alleged ‘Punch’
Liverpool striker Luis Suarez has escaped action for allegedly punching Chile defender Gonzalo Jara during a World Cup Qualifier back in March of this year.
The Uruguyan FA confirmed today that Liverpool striker Luis Suarez has escaped action for allegedly punching Chile defender Gonzalo Jara during a World Cup Qualifier in March.
FIFA had opened an investigation against Suarez after he was caught on camera throwing a jab at Jara as the pair jostled in the penalty box while waiting for a corner to be taken. Referee Nestor Pitana missed the incident at the time but following a review of the case, it seems FIFA has decided against any further action.
A statement on the AUF website read:
“The matter in question does not require the intervention of the FIFA disciplinary committee and therefore the disciplinary procedure in question is declared closed,” FIFA said in a fax which was published on the AUF website (auf.org.uy).
AUF president Sebastian Bauza was pleased with the decision and warned Suarez that he needs to be aware he’s under scrutiny at all times.
“It’s very good news for Luis, the national team and for the whole group,”
“We understand that from now on, Luis should realise that he will be watched from all sides and we hope that this experience, when added to others, will be useful, so that he becomes the player will all want him to be.” Bauza said on the AUF website
The AUF’s defence was that Suarez had reacted after being provoked by Jara, after the defender has grabbed him by the nuts. The Liverpool hitman will miss Uruguay’s next qualifier away to Venezuela due to accumulating too many yellow cards, but has escaped any further action for his ‘punch’. Here’s a video of the incident in case you haven’t seen it.
