Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has confirmed that midfielder Jack Wilshere will undergo ‘minor’ surgery on his troublesome ankle injury in the forthcoming days.

Wilshere missed the whole of last season due to an injury to his right ankle but made a successful return to action earlier this season. Just as he was starting to look like his old self, the 21-year-old was forced to sit out the majority of March and April due to concerns over his left ankle and has been used sparingly over the last few weeks.

There were reports back in March that suggested Wilshere was having problems with his initial injury and while the club denied these reports, it seems they may have had some foundation after all with Arsene Wenger confirming on  Arsenal.com that the midfielder will undergo ‘small surgery’ to remove a pin in his right ankle.

The surgery is not considered serious and Jack is expected back in time to take a full part in Arsenal’s pre-season preparations ahead of next season – although he will miss England’s up-coming friendlies against  the Republic of Ireland and Brazil.

Wenger also confirmed that the club have restricted Wilshere’s involvement in the first team over the past few weeks with this ‘problem’ in mind, and he will only be used in the final two games if he’s ‘really needed’.  Here’s whats the boss told the clubs official website:

“Jack will have small, mild surgery, It is a very small, small, small one. It is to remove a small pin. It will not be a problem.

“He will need very minor surgery, but we manage that as far as we can until the end of the season. At the moment, we use him only in games when I feel he is really needed.

“He won’t be available for England in the forthcoming friendlies, but he will be back for pre-season. Of course he is disappointed to miss the England game in Brazil, but he will go next year [to the World Cup finals]!”

So it looks like Wilshere will only play a small role in our final two games before having the surgery as soon as the season is over. After a few weeks rehab, he’ll be ready to start pre-season with the rest of the squad. It’s been obvious in recent weeks that something wasn’t right with him but at least we now know what the problem is and hopefully this ‘minor surgery’ will clear up any issues once and for all.
