Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has made signing a world-class striker his priority this summer and Real Madrid’s Gonzalo Higuain has emerged as prime target with the Gunners ready to launch a record £19m bid, according to the Telegraph.

The report claims the boss has £70m available to spend and is planning on making his moves in the market early after securing qualification to the Champions League, and with the club facing a tricky two legged play-off in August it seems we want to have a settled squad in place in time for that crucial double-header.

While we’ve shared the goals around the squad this season – with four players reaching doubles figures in the Premier League alone – a clinical striker could make a huge difference in turning us into a trophy-winning side again and it appears Wenger agrees.

The Telegraph suggest that the boss has held a long-term interest in Higuain after narrowly missing out on his signature in 2007 and is now alerted to the 26-year-old’s availability this summer, with the Argentine understood to be available for around £19m.

That would represent a record fee for Arsenal but it would surely be money well spent as Higuain is a world-class forward who’s proven it at the highest level – scoring 120 goals and providing 45 assists in 264 games for Madrid.

The newspaper claims Wenger is also keeping a close eye on Fiorentina’s Stevan Jovetic, the unsettled Wayne Rooney and Higuain’s Madrid strike partner Karim Benzema, but it’s the former River Plate man who looks to be the most realistic target.

Personally, I think Higuain would be the best buy out of those four reported targets and I think he’d be a great piece of business at £19m.
