Mega-rich Paris Saint Germain are preparing a mammoth £100m package to try and lure Wayne Rooney to France this summer, according to the Mirror.

Rooney’s future has been thrown in doubt after Sir Alex Ferguson revealed he had asked to leave the club this summer with the striker said to be frustrated at being left on the bench for key games and constantly being substituted last season.

The Mirror claim Arsenal and Chelsea are watching developments closely and may offer the 27-year-old a chance to remain in the Premier League if United decide to sell, but they will face stiff competition from big-spending PSG.

The report suggests the Ligue 1 champions are ready to blow the London duo out the water with their Middle Eastern owners willing to pay £40m for Rooney and offer him a four-year contract worth a staggering £15m-a-year after tax, making the whole deal worth £100m.

It’s unlikely any deal will take place before Rooney hold’s talks with new boss David Moyes over his future but with the former Everton supremo not due to officially take over the reigns at Old Trafford until the 1st July, it’s unclear when any potential meeting will take place.

If United want to sell it’s safe to assume they’d prefer to sell abroad and a £40m offer from PSG would be extremely tempting. However, it remains to be seen whether Rooney would be prepared to go and play in the French league. I can’t see it happening myself. The standard of Ligue 1 is well below the Premier League, not to mention the Rooney’s have just had their second child and a move to PSG would mean uprooting his family.

Therefore, if United sell I think the player will push for a move within England and the only realistic option I can see would be Chelsea as Arsenal are highly unlikely to be able to afford his wages. But if I had to bet, I’d still back Rooney being a United player next season. Only time will tell though.
