Paulinho: Madrid enter chase

Tottenham Hotspur face a tough battle to land highly-rated Brazilian midfielder Paulinho with Real Madrid ready to hijack the north Londoners £15m move, according to the Daily Mail.

Paulinho has emerged as one of South America’s hottest properties in recent months and he put in an excellent display for Brazil against England earlier this month, scoring the equaliser in a 2-2 draw at the Maracana.

The Mail claim Spurs were close to agreeing a £15m deal with Corinthians for the dynamic midfielder, but news of Madrid’s late interest has lead to the Brazilian outfit rejecting the Londoners bid and make it clear they won’t accept a penny less than his £17m buy-out clause.

The news will be a big blow to Spurs and boss Andre Villas-Boas, who’s keen on strengthening his squad after narrowly missing out on Champions League qualification last season, and it seems they will now have to persuade the 24-year-old to chose White Hart Lane over a switch to Madrid.

Carlo Ancelotti is expected to be revealed as Jose Mourinho’s successor in the coming days and the newspaper suggests he’s a big fan of Paulinho’s and is determined to push through a transfer as soon as he’s in the Bernabeu hot-seat.
