Arsenal Linked With Surprise Raid On Chelsea
A rather surprising transfer rumour today with the Mirror newspaper reporting that Arsenal are interested in signing Chelsea striker Fernando Torres this summer
With the summer transfer window set to open, there is plenty of gossip doing the rounds in the newspapers so we’ll keep you up-to-date with the latest transfer rumours. Today, Arsenal are linked with a shock swoop for Fernando Torres.
A rather surprising transfer rumour today with the Mirror reporting that Arsenal are interested in signing Chelsea striker Fernando Torres this summer, with the Spaniard not expected to be in new boss Jose Mourinho’s plans next season.
Torres has struggled to justify his £50m price-tag since making the move to Stamford Bridge from Liverpool in January 2011, only managing to score 15 goals in 82 league games so far.
The Mirror claim the 29-year-old is expected to be made available for transfer this summer with new manager Jose Mourinho not considering the Spaniard a regular starter in his new-look line-up next season, and it appears the Gunners are ready to make their move.
The newspaper suggests Arsenal remain on course to sign Gonzalo Higuain from Real Madrid but Arsene Wenger is understood to be keen to bring in another striker and has apparently identified Torres as a potential signing.
Interestingly, the report claims Wenger’s plan is to play Torres alongside Higuain up front – which if true would mean a change in formation next season as Arsenal have played only play one up top in recent years.
Torres is currently away on international duty with Spain at the Confederations Cup and is expected to hold talks with Mourinho when he returns to the Bridge next week, and a shock switch to north London could be on the cards if the Portuguese coach makes it clear he’s not in his plans next campaign, if this report is to be believed.
Personally, I think this is ‘silly season’ at it’s best and I wouldn’t be betting my mortgage on Torres lining up for the Gunners next season, that’s for sure. But in today’s world, you just never know….
