Benfica Ezequiel Garay

Manchester United are expected to complete the £17m signing of Benfica centre-back Ezeguiel Garay after new boss David Moyes gave the go ahead on his first day in charge, according to the Mirror.

The Argentina international is believed to have been on United’s radar for some time with former boss Sir Alex Ferguson tracking the 26-year-old for well over a year before retiring at the end of last season.

The Mirror suggest a £17m move to Old Trafford was agreed and Benfica even went out and bought Garay’s replacement with the £3.5m purchase of Lisandro Ezequiel Lopez from Arsenal de Sarandi.

However, the deal had to be put on hold due to the managerial change at the club but with Moyes officially starting work as Fergie’s successor today, the newspaper claims he has now given the go-ahead for the deal to be completed and Garay is expected to make the move to Manchester shortly.

Moyes is understood to want a new centre-back duo to concerns over the long-term fitness of Nemanja Vidic and Garay would be an excellent addition. The 6ft 4in defender has been a rock at the back for Benfica since making the move from Real Madrid in 2011 and would no doubt shore up a leaking United defence that condeded 43 goals last season.

But this is still paper talk at the minute so I wouldn’t be rushing out to get ‘Garay’ printed on the back of your shirt until it’s up on ManUtd.com!
