Rooney Keen To Play For Mourinho As Chelsea Look To Trump Arsenal With £20m Offer
Chelsea are set to table a £20m offer for Wayne Rooney with the striker keen to link up with Jose Mourinho at Stamford Bridge despite interest from Arsenal.
With the summer transfer window set to open, there is plenty of gossip doing the rounds in the newspapers so we’ll keep you up-to-date with the latest transfer rumours. Today, could Wayne Rooney be joining Chelsea for £20m?
Chelsea are set to table a £20m offer for Wayne Rooney with the Manchester United striker understood to be keen to link up with Jose Mourinho at Stamford Bridge despite interest from Arsenal, according to the Telegraph.
Rooney’s future has been cast in doubt after Sir Alex Ferguson revealed towards the end of last season that the 27-year-old had asked to leave the club after being left out of some key fixtures, including the decisive Champions League quarter final second leg against Real Madrid.
The Telegraph claim Arsenal have been strongly linked with a move with boss Arsene Wenger seemingly ready to open the cheque book this summer to bring in some proven talent, but the Gunners now face stiff competition from their London rivals with Chelsea also tipped to table an opening £20m bid.
The newspaper suggests that United are determined not to sell to a Premier League rival but Rooney may push for a move to west London once the expected offer from the Europa League winners comes in, as the striker is keen to work with Jose Mourinho at the Bridge.
New boss David Moyes is due to hold talks with the former Everton ace today where things should become a lot clearer, but Rooney’s silence and refusal to rule out a move has left many thinking he’s ready to end his nine-year stay at Old Trafford.
United are going to have a difficult decision to make as the forward only has two-years left to run on his £250,000-a-week contract. If they refuse to let him leave they run the risk of of being forced into selling him on the cheap next summer, or worse still, lose him for nothing the following year.
If the champions are determined to keep hold of Rooney, it’s likely they will try and extend his contract now to avoid such circumstances but it would be a huge commitment to extend such a lucrative contract for a player who’s shown signs of discontent at the club.
It’s certainly going to be an interesting few weeks and Wayne Rooney looks likely to be one of this summers big transfer sagas.
