Man Utd Reject £10m Player-Plus-Cash Offer From Chelsea For Wayne Rooney
Manchester United have rejected a bid from Chelsea for Wayne Rooney with the Blues offering £10m plus either Juan Mata or David Luiz for the want-away striker
With the summer transfer window now open, there is plenty of gossip doing the rounds in the newspapers so we’ll keep you up-to-date with the latest transfer rumours. Today, Manchester United have rejected a formal bid for Wayne Rooney from Chelsea.
Manchester United have rejected a player-plus-cash offer from Chelsea for want-away striker Wayne Rooney, according to the BBC.
The report claims Chelsea offered to pay £10m in cash plus either Juan Mata or David Luiz in part exchange for the unsettled 27-year-old striker, but it was rejected it out-of-hand with the champions insisting he’s not for sale.
It was reported on Tuesday evening that Rooney has been left “angry and confused” by United’s treatment of him in recent days after boss David Moyes suggested he was considered as back-up to Robin van Persie, which the player took as a calculated insult to mean he’s nothing more than a squad player.
A statement on Sky Sports News read:
“Rooney believes he is at the peak of his career and has no intention of becoming a squad rotation player or by playing second fiddle to anyone at Old Trafford.
“He believes he has nothing left to prove after nine successful seasons – yet that is what is being suggested by reports in the media which have interpreted the club’s statement as meaning he’s currently on trial for the coming season.
“Since he’s returned from the pre-season tour due to injury, Rooney has been in touch with the club and spoken to David Moyes on the phone – he is angry and confused at the way he’s been treated.”
The Mirror reported this morning that Rooney is determined to leave Old Trafford and while Arsenal are understood to be keen on luring him to north London, his preferred destination is Stamford Bridge to work under Jose Mourinho.
The Blues appear to have now made their move and if the BBC are accurate in saying the opening bid was £10m plus either Mata or Luiz, many would suggest that United should bite their hands off. £10m and Mata for Rooney sounds like an excellent deal for the champions and if they could squeeze a little more out of Roman Abramovich, I think David Moyes would be a very happy man.
It will also be interesting to see if Arsenal respond to Chelsea’s move with an offer of their own. It’s unlikely Arsene Wenger will offer any players in exchange so United could be more receptive to a straight cash deal, but the Gunners may opt to concentrate on their pursuit of Luis Suarez for now.
