Xabi Alonso is set to disappoint Chelsea and Liverpool by turning his back on a return to the Premier League and sign a new one-year contract extension at Real Madrid, according to the Express.

Alonso has just one year remaining on his current contract at the Bernabeu and has been linked with a return to England in recent weeks after Madrid signed Asier Illarramendi from Real Sociedad.

New Blues boss Jose Mourinho was reportedly keen on bringing the Spanish midfielder with him to Stamford Bridge this summer as he looks to strengthen the holding role in his new-look Chelsea side. Liverpool have also been linked with a move for Alonso this summer with Brendan Rodgers understood to be interested in bringing back the former Anfield favourite to Merseyside.

However, the 31-year-old is set to turn his back on a potential return to the Premier League with the Express claiming that Madrid have offered him a new one-year extension which Alonso is expected to sign in the coming days.

The report suggest’s that Alonso’s agent Inaki Ibanez met with Real officials back in May where the midfielder was offered a new contract. The deal was delayed after the he picked up a groin injury but with Alonso now nearing full fitness again following an operation in June and Madrid expect him to pen the extension that will keep him at the Spanish giants until 2015.

New boss Carlo Ancelotti is understood to be a huge fan of Alonso’s and the former Liverpool ace recently admitted he can’t wait to get working with the clubs new signings and new coach Zinedine Zidane.

“I think the new signings have been good for the team and the important things is that we have built a base,”

“I’m sure each new player will contribute and the more options the coach has, the better. I think we know each other well. We have been together for some time now.

“We are feeling very good about the season and have the highest of expectations.

“I have always admired him [Zidane] a lot. He is someone every footballer looks up to,” he continued. “I’m very motivated about working alongside him because of everything he has achieved and experienced.” Alonso was quoted as saying by the Express.

That doesn’t sound like a man who’s thinking about a move any time soon and if he does end up signing a new deal at Madrid, it’s unlikely we’ll see him in the Premiership again as he’ll be 33 by the time his deal runs out.
