Liverpool got off to a winning start with a strike from striker Daniel Sturridge securing a 1-0 win over Stoke City at Anfield on Saturday lunchtime.

The hosts were by far the better team in the first half and took a deserved lead when Sturridge fired home from the edge of the box in the 37th minute. Both sides had chances to add to the scoreline but the woodwork denied Liverpool while new signing Simon Mignolet made a stunning double save late on to deny Stoke a share of the points, saving Walters 89th minute penalty before denying Jones from the rebound.
