Liverpool have been handed an injury boost ahead of their clash with Newcastle on Saturday with Philippe Coutinho, Glen Johnson, Aly Cissokho and Joe Allen all closing in on first team returns, according to the Mirror.

Right-back Johnson has been on the sidelines for the last six weeks after limping out of Liverpool’s 1-0 win over Manchester United at the start of September, but he has been training well in recent days and could be in contention to start at St James’ Park this weekend.

Midfielder Allen has also been on the treatment table for most of the season after picking up a hamstring injury in August while left-back Cissokho was forced off just 10 minutes into his debut against Notts County with an ankle injury last month, but the duo are back in full training and boss Brendan Rodgers confirmed they could feature against the Geordies.

“Aly has trained and he should be fine and fit for the Newcastle game, and likewise Joe. Glen’s out on the field and hopefully after the international break he’ll be ready to come back,” Rodgers is quoted as saying by the Mirror.

Coutinho is also closing in on a first team return after picking up a shoulder injury against Swansea in mid-September with the Brazilian play-maker confirming this week that his surgery was a success and he’ll be back soon.

“The surgery was a success, and I’ll be back soon.” Coutinho said this week in the Mirror.

Rodgers initially suggested the former Inter Milan ace might be out until early November but the Mirror claim Coutinho is on schedule to make a return earlier than expected and could be back in the squad within the next week.

The return of the quartet will be a huge boost to Liverpool as they enter a crucial period that sees them come up against the likes of Arsenal, Everton, Tottenham, Man City and Chelsea
