Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is keen on signing Atletico Madrid’s Diego Costa in January but may have to pay over £35m to land the striker, according to the Mirror.

The report claims Mourinho is desperate to sign a big-name front man when the transfer window re-opens in order to strengthen his Premier League title aspirations, and Costa is believed to be on his radar.

The 25-year-old is enjoying a stunning season with Madrid, scoring 12 goals in 12 games so far,  having signed a new deal in the summer following strong interest from Liverpool, and he’s set to represent Spain at next summers World Cup final’s after switching his allegiance from Brazil.

Understandably, Atletico are going to be keen to hang on to the striker and the Mirror suggests the La Liga outfit will demand at least £35m should Chelsea come calling, which is likely to prove a major stumbling block to any potential deal.

Mourinho is eager for owner Roman Abramovich to back him with funds for a new striker but the Russian is unlikely to pay that kind of money, especially with Romelu Lukaku set to return to the club next summer and Fernando Torres finally finding some form.

Should Chelsea ditch their plans to move for Costa, Mourinho will either have to make do with his current trio of strikers – Torres, Eto’o and Ba – or switch his focus to a cheaper alternative.
