While the transfer window may be closed it doesn’t stop clubs from working hard behind the scenes in preparation for January, so we’ll bring you the latest news from the Premier League including all the transfer gossip. Today, Arsenal are linked with Fabian Schar while Chelsea face a fight to land Jackson Martinez.

Arsenal lead Schar chase

First up and talkSPORT are reporting that Arsenal are leading the chase for FC Basel’s highly-rated young defender Fabian Schar.

Schar has impressed at centre-back for Basel both domestically and in Europe in recent months after making the move to the Swiss champions from FC Wil in 2012.

It seems his display’s have caught the eye of Arsene Wenger with the report claiming the Gunners boss has been monitoring his progress this season and could now make a formal move for the 21-year-old in January.

Schar is contracted to Basel until 2015 and talkSPORT suggest Arsenal will have to fight off competition from Italy and Germany to bring the defender to the Premier League.

Should the north Londoners be successful in luring Schar to the Emirates it would once again call into question the future of Thomas Vermaelen, who’s failed to break into the first eleven this season after losing his place last February.

Chelsea face fight for Martinez

Next up and talkSPORT are also reporting that Chelsea face stiff competition from big-spending Monaco to try and land Porto goal machine Jackson Martinez.

The French outfit have invested heavily in recent seasons with the likes of Radamel Falcao and Joao Mourinho signed in the summer, and it seems the Ligue 1 club have now set their sights on Martinez.

The 27-year-old has been in stunning form for Porto since making the move from Mexican side Jaguares in 2012, scoring an incredible 40 goals in 55 games so far.

His impressive display’s haven’t gone unnoticed here in England with talkSPORT claiming Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is keen on raiding his old club for the prolific hitman. However, the Blues face stiff competition from not only Monaco but also Borussia Dortmund and Napoli who are also understood to be mintoring the strikers situation.

Like I rightly say in one of my comments, about having a very strong bench; then I will say yes arsenal need to sign a good defender for back up in case of injury or you rotate the players, for them to have playing times.
