Liverpool are ready to go head-to-head with Tottenham for the signing of Barcelona midfielder Sergi Roberto, according to the Daily Star.

The 21-year-old is struggling to force his way into boss Tata Martino’s plans at the Nou Camp, making just three appearances this season and six  appearances since joining the club as a youngster in 2006.

The Star claim that Roberto is becoming increasingly unsettled at Barca due to his lack of action and will consider a move to a club that can offer him regular first team football.

The newspaper says that both Liverpool and Tottenham have made contact with the midfielders representatives to register their interest in bringing him to the Premier League, but they may face stiff competition from Italian giants AC Milan who are also understood to have made their interest known.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers was busy in the summer transfer market and it’s so far paid off with the Reds currently sitting in the top four and looking like they could push for the title this season. He could well invest again in January to further enhance his talented young squad and Roberto fits the bill of the type of exciting youngster the Northern Irishman is looking for at Anfield.

Spurs were also active in the summer with Andre Villas-Boas re-shaping his squad and bringing in several new players, but the big challenge for the Premiership duo will be convincing Roberto that he will play on a regular basis as competition in midfield at both clubs is fierce.

There could also be a problem striking a deal with Barcelona, as the report claims that the Spanish under-21 star has a hefty €20million release clause in his contract and the Catalans are not likely to let one of their more promising youngsters leave on the cheap.
