Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho wants to sign £10m-rated French defender Kurt Zouma when the transfer window re-opens in January to help save the clubs season, according to the Mirror.

The Blues campaign is under threat of being derailed by not only their lack of firepower up front but also a leaky defence that shipped three goals during a disappointing defeat to Stoke City on Saturday.

John Terry has remained an integral part of Mourinho’s defence but at 33-years-old, he’s now approaching the twilight of his career and he’s been forced to play alongside both Gary Cahill and David Luiz at times this season with neither seemingly doing enough to cement themselves as a first team regular.

The Mirror claim Mourinho is now desperate to sign a new centre-back in January and has made Saint-Etienne starlet Zouma his top priority with the clubs scouts classing him as Europe’s most outstanding young defensive talent after watching him on several occasions this season.

The 19-year-old has already racked up over 50 appearance for the Ligue 1 outfit after breaking into their first team two years ago but his campaign has been rocked after being slapped with a 10-game ban for a horror tackle that saw him heavily criticised in the French media.

The report suggests that despite this, Chelsea will make their move to sign the powerful defender in January and Mourinho is hoping to secure a quick deal worth in the region of £10m in order to fend off interest from the likes of Manchester City while his eligibility to play in the Champions League is also thought to be a key factor in the west Londoners thinking.

Zouma has already represented France at every youth level from Under-16 right through to under-21 level and is tipped to break into the senior set-up soon.
