Manchester United’s poor form continued this evening as Sunderland took control of their Capital One Cup semi final with a 2-1 win at the Stadium of Light.

The home side took the lead on the stroke of half time when Ryan Giggs put through his own net under pressure from Phil Bardsley before Nemanja Vidic levelled just after the break with a powerful header.

Sunderland then won it midway through the second half when Tom Cleverley was adjudged to have fouled Johnson in the area, and Fabio Borini smashed home the spot kick to give the Black Cats a one-goal lead heading to the second leg at Old Trafford.
