Manchester United have tabled a £20million offer for Juventus midfielder Claudio Marchisio but could face competition from rivals Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea, according to the Express.

The Italian international was strongly linked with a move to United in the summer but Juventus refused to do business, insisting he was an important part of their future plans.

However, the 27-year-old has dropped down the pecking order at the Turin giants this season with Paul Pogba and Arturo Vidal considered as the first choice central midfield pairing, and it’s been suggested that Juve may cash-in on Marchisio following the clubs early exit from the Champions League – which could cost them in the region of £17m.

The Express cite reports emanating from Italy that claim United have been in touch with the Serie A champions to enquire about the players availability and made it clear they would be willing to pay £20m to take the midfielder to Old Trafford.

United have endured a disappointing start to the season under new boss David Moyes and the newspaper suggests the Scot is desperate to add to his midfield options in January to give his flagging squad a major boost during the second half of the campaign.

The report states that Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool have also shown an interest in Marchisio but it remains to be seen whether any of the trio will make their interest formal and challenge United’s bid.

While there appears to be a number of clubs keen on bringing him to England, Marchisio has recently gone on record as saying he is ignoring the speculation and is happy at Juventus.

“I want to continue winning with this jersey, I have no intention to change.

“But every year, especially in summer, there have been rumours that involved me.

“In addition to this one, I have another two years on my deal with Juventus.

“I hope to play as long as possible with this jersey, it’s not my intention to change.” Marchisio is quoted as saying by the Express.

However, these comments were made on Juve’s official television channel – where you’d expect him to commit his future to the club – so it may not give us a true reflection of whether he’s considering his future or not.
