Moyes Confident Of Landing £23m German But Arsenal And Chelsea Also Interested

Manchester United are confident of seeing off interest from a whole host of clubs including Arsenal and Chelsea to sign Borussia Dortmund ace Ilkay Gundogan

With the January transfer window now open for business clubs will be working hard to try and strengthen their squad for the second half of the season, so we’ll keep you up-to-date with all the latest news, gossip and rumours. Today, Man Utd are confident of landing Ilkay Gundogan.

Manchester United boss David Moyes is confident he can fend off interest from a whole host of clubs including Arsenal and Chelsea to sign Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan in the summer, according to the Daily Mail.

The German international has been in superb form for Dortmund since joining from FC Nurnberg in 2011, helping the club lift the Bundesliga title in 2012 as well as making it all the way to the Champions League final last season.

However, the 23-year-old’s contract is due to expire in 2015 and so far he’s been unable to agree terms over an extension, leading to intense speculation he’s set for a move.

German newspaper Bild claimed last week that United, Real Madrid, Barcelona and of course Dortmund, had all submitted contract offers and the midfielder was quoted as saying he would be making a decision over his future ‘soon’:

“I will soon make a decision that will be well considered. It’s still really open.” Gundogan is quoted as saying in Bild.

The Mail are now reporting that United are growing increasingly confident of winning the race for his signature following talks with the players father, Irfan, and the defensive midfielder will set them back around £23m.

The newspaper suggests that Arsenal and Chelsea are also showing a strong interest in luring Gundogan to England, but it appears Old Trafford is his most likely destination if he does decide to try his luck in the Premiership next season.

It would obviously be a major coup if the champions could pull it off. Gundogan looks as though he’ll have his pick of the top European clubs and if United can win the race, it would be a huge boost to not only the club but also to boss David Moyes – who’s endured a difficult start to life at United and has come under pressure for a lack of transfer activity.

First team football could be a deciding factor in the players thinking if he does opt for a move to England over Spain, as he’s going to face intense competition to get into the midfield’s at both Madrid and Barcelona. Whereas United will be able to offer him a first team place.

Even at Arsenal or Chelsea, he’ll face stiff competition in the middle of the park, so it will be understandable if Gundogan chooses Old Trafford simply so he can be guaranteed more minutes on the pitch.
