Manchester United boss David Moyes is continuing to keep a close eye on highly-rated Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho ahead of a potential summer move, according to the Daily Mail.

The report claims that Moyes sent his scouts to watch the 21-year-old in action for the eighth time already this season with United representatives understood to be in the stands on Sunday night to watch Lisbon draw 0-0 with Academica.

Carvalho is a powerful box-to-box midfielder and has been tipped to make the Portugal World Cup squad after making his debut during their qualifier against Sweden in November.

The Mail suggests that Moyes will continue to monitor the youngster over the next few months ahead of a summer move, but will hope to land the player below the full value of his buy-out clause, which stands at a whopping €45m (£37.5m).

Midfield has certainly been an area of concern for United this season with Michael Carrick struggling with injury, Tom Cleverley failing to convince and Marouane Fellaini being hampered by a persistent wrist injury, so it wouldn’t be a surprise if new blood in the center of the park was a priority for Moyes this summer.

Carvalho should have no problem adjusting to the physical nature of the Premier League but it remains to be seen whether the champions will be able to strike a deal with the Portuguese outfit, with his release clause potentially creating a stumbling block as the player is still contracted to the club until 2018 so they are under no pressure to cash-in.
