Manchester United boss David Moyes is weighing-up a £13m move for Atletico Madrid centre-back Joao Miranda this summer as he continues to look for a long-term replacement for Nemanja Vidic, according to the Daily Star.

The Serbian international announced last week that he’ll be ending his eight-year stay at Old Trafford when his contract expires at the end of the season, while Rio Ferdinand’s future at the club is in serious doubt with the 35-year-old’s deal also up in the summer.

While United would still be able to call upon the services of Phil Jones, Jonny Evans and Chris Smalling, Moyes could potentially be without two of his most experienced center-backs next season so it’s no surprise he’s starting to draw up a list of potential targets.

The Star claim Moyes is keen to bring in an experienced defender that he can build a new-look defence around and Atletico’s Miranda is understood to have emerged as a key target.

The newspaper suggests that United have sent scouts to keep a close eye on the Brazilian international on five separate occasions in recent months and Moyes is now considering testing Ateltico’s resolve with a £13m bid this summer.

United have endured a torrid season so far and are facing a huge battle just to qualify for the Champions League again next year, so it’s no surprise they are looking to shake things up starting at the back.

With Vidic leaving and Ferdinand possibly following him, there’s little doubt a new top quality center-back is required and it looks like Miranda has joined the likes of Benfica’s Ezequiel Garay and FC Porto’s Eliaquim Mangala as being touted as potential new signings.

The 29-year-old has almost 300 club appearances to his name as well as 7 caps for Brazil, and has been an impressive figure at the heart of Atletico Madrid’s title-chasing team this season. Whether the Spaniard’s will be prepared to sell remains to be seen, but it might take an offer in excess of £13m to persuade them to cash in.
