Wenger Dealt Blow As Neuer Tips £37m Attacker To Snub Arsenal Move

The January transfer window may have slammed shut but clubs will still be working hard behind the scenes at identifying targets for the summer, so we’ll bring you all the latest news, gossip and rumours. Today, Gooner Mac brings us the latest on the clubs pursuit of Julian Draxler.

Manuel Neuer has tipped his international team mates Julian Draxler to snub a £37m move to Arsenal in order to stay at Schalke and continue his development, according to talkSPORT.

Draxler is a name many Arsenal fans will be familiar with as he’s been strongly linked with a move to the Emirates over the past 12 months, and speculation went into overdrive in January with widespread reports suggesting we were deep in talks with Schalke about trying to sign the exciting 20-year-old.

A move failed to materialise after the two clubs couldn’t agree on a fee but Arsene Wenger is expected to try his luck once again at the end of the season when the players £37m buy-out clause will become active.

However, Bayern Munich goalkeeper, Manuel Neuer, believes his German international team mate will snub any big money move to remain with Schalke ‘for a long time’ in order to play regular first team football and continue his development.

“Julian is still young and for this reason, I believe he will play at Schalke in the next years.

“Julian knows what is best for him. I am sure he will play at international level and at Schalke for a long time. Now, it is important for him to play and improve.” Neuer is quoted as saying by talkSPORT.

It’s not clear if Neuer has any ‘inside information’ from Draxler himself, or whether this is just his opinion, but the keeper clearly believes the attacker wont be going anywhere any time soon.

Despite this, I still think Draxler is going to be the big transfer saga surrounding Arsenal in the summer. I just hope if we are going to make another attempt to sign him, we do it before the World Cup as the interest in his signature will shoot through the roof if he impresses in Brazil.

We know that he has a £37m buy-out clause and Schalke aren’t likely to do business any lower. Why would they? So if Wenger wants him badly enough, he needs to just get in early, active the clause and get the deal done. If the player rejects the move for whatever reason, then we have plenty of time to seek a replacement.

So, what’s the ‘blow’ there for Wenger? Neuer gave an opinion whilst he’s not Draxler’s team manager or director. Just as Neuer is his team mate in the German national team, so are Mertesacker, Ozil and Podolski who all could exercise influence on Draxler over where he plays his football next season. so let us stop these alarmist headlines.
